About this role:

In this role as a Pilot Plant Engineer, you will serve as a vital resource for R&D by applying technical and leadership skills to the execution of internal research runs on the Pilot Plant.

This role requires mastery of engineering fundamentals, and you will learn how to expand conceptual understanding to practical applications in the field. Success in this scope is measured by the ability for the team to deliver on the research needs of the organization. You will interact with groups of different technical backgrounds, and must be able to explain complex information to others. You will also learn how to translate process information and observations into functional conclusions for the various work groups you will interact with.

It is your responsibility to use technical experience, established practices, and personal judgement to analyze and resolve both straightforward and complex problems. While this role requires that you work within established guidelines and policies, primarily as they relate to process safety, your individual performance has the capacity to significantly impact the quality of the team’s work output.

Responsibilities – Duties, projects, tasks, and activities you would be responsible for in this role

  • Coordinates with internal and external roles (Plant operators, Product scientists, Process scientists) to lead coordination and execution of research runs on the facility’s pilot plant, within schedule constraints.

  • Leads preparation for run conditions and plant readiness based on desired conditions from scientists within our partner organizations, with consideration of known plant limitations

  • Champions small projects based on research needs and plant improvement opportunities

  • Uses knowledge of business drivers to appropriately determine priorities

  • Applies knowledge of the plant/technology to research preparation, referencing historical data and conferring with research teams and Technology Center or other subject matter experts (SMEs)

  • Ensures Most Effective Technology (MET) is understood and utilized, and that process automation is used as a tool to optimize plant performance

  • Utilizes defined MET and challenges/escalates MET application and assumptions when better solutions arise.

  • Partners with experts to perform advanced troubleshooting and leads Pilot Plant team to successful outcomes from research runs.

Qualifications

  • A minimum Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering, or other related engineering discipline

  • Previous Intern or Co-Op experience in a related field is a plus

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
