Job Description Summary

The Wildlife Damage Management Biologist, under direction, assists in planning, developing, administering, and providing wildlife damage management. Conducts wildlife damage management activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the supervisor in planning, developing, administering, and providing wildlife damage management by either technical assistance, or direct control.

  • Works effectively with a wide variety of personalities and special interest groups. Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with numerous agencies, organizations, institutions, industry groups, and individuals.

  • Gathers, compiles, and evaluates data on damage or hazards caused by various wildlife species.

  • Conducts wildlife damage management activities where there is a demonstrated need consistent with the planned use of any given area to prevent or reduce economic loss to property, to protect human health and safety or agricultural resources. Wildlife damage management techniques/methods used include: toxic agents, adversive agents, auditory devices, and mechanical or environmental controls. Modifies or adapts established wildlife damage management techniques as necessary to meet local conditions and addresses specific environmental, economic, or political considerations. Must conduct all operations in accordance with local, state, and federal laws, regulations and agency policy. Must demonstrate a respect for the need for safety in all operations, including the operation of motor vehicles, firarms, toxic agents, wildlife damage management devices, and equipment.

  • Maintains, secures, and properly cares for all assigned government property.

  • Coordinates, manages, and conducts wildlife damage management presentations and exhibits consisting of appropriate materials such as skulls, skins, wildlife damage management tools, photographs, and leaflets which are presented at such places as livestock shows, fairs, agricultural field days, workshops, and a variety of educational institutions at all levels in order to educate and inform the general public of wildlife damage management activities. Must be able to discuss endangered species concepts, and be familiar with the ranges of the various threatened and endangered species that might come in conflict with any phase of wildlife damage management activities.

  • Assists other authorities in the monitoring of diseases and parasites that are transmissible to the human population or domestic animals.

  • Prepares required scientific and specific project reports.

  • In the absence of a supervisor at a specific work site or project serves as the senior leader for assigned tasks.

  • Conducts demonstrations and training for coworkers, cooperators or other interested groups on wildlife damage management activities,techniques, and program objectives.

  • Assists national and state authorities by providing training, testing, and technical assistance in special emphasis areas such as avian influenza surveillance, feral hog eradication, psuedo- rabies identification, and other wildlife diseases affecting human health and safety, and agricultural resources.

  • Recommends through channels problems for potential research or developmental study. May assist specialized research efforts by participation in field tests of proposed wildlife damage management materials, devices, or methods.

  • Prepares and submits routine and special reports regarding daily, weekly, or monthly activities, observations, events, and other relevant data. Submits work product data into the management information system (MIS) on a weekly basis.

  • Prepares miscellaneous administrative documents such as travel vouchers, leave requests, declarations of monthly service, etc., accurately and within established deadlines.

  • Performs other duties as may be required in support of the Wildlife Services mission.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of related experience in the control and management of wildlife predation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Computer competencies required.

  • Strong service ethic and desire to work with all audiences in assigned county, regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, disability or national origin.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Other Requirements:

  • Travel connected with official duties may be required. This may include attendance at night and/or weekend meetings, participation in out-of-county events.

  • Must have access to personal vehilce and obtain/maintain valid Driver's license and appropriate liability insurance.

  • Must have willingness to work necessary hours to fulfill job responsiblities (some evenings and weekends).

  • Must reside in assigned county (NOTE: Urban designed counties exempt from this requirement).
