Indian Health Service Social Services Assistant (Resident Assistant) in United States

Summary The purpose of the position is to supervise and deliver quality behavioral health services and care to youth ages 12 to 17 years of age with substance use/chemical dependency/co-occurring problems. Serves actively and constructively as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team, supports the organization and program philosophy of care; ensure the safety and well-being of each resident; provides direct psychological services to the adolescents. Reports to Supervisory Resident Assistant. Responsibilities Provides non-professional counseling for patients. Keeps well written records (daily logs, behavior modification charts, and incident reports) in accordance with the treatment center policies and procedures. Provides crisis intervention and management of aggressive or difficult behavior. Provides guidance and instruction in group activities, personal health and hygiene, courtesy, and etiquette to residents. Supervises daily tasks and assignments of residents such as making beds, housekeeping assignments, assist in maintenance of the living units. Maintains a safe environment for residents. Assists the treatment team in the assessment, emotional support counseling, recognizes and responds appropriately to deviations from normal behavior. Daily interacts with psychologist, nurses, social workers, administrators, community resources, resident and their families. These duties are described at the full performance level (GS-7). The GS-5/6 levels are developmental leading to such performance. Keep in mind that the position is a rotation shift and covers weekends and holidays. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Specialized Experience for GS-5 - recognizing and responding appropriately to deviations from normal behavior, identify, problematic behaviors, and reporting to treatment team, serve as a group leader in community or residential recreation or training programs, and/or perform as a counselor in a youth summer camp. Specialized Experience for GS-6 - providing client services in at least one of the fields, such as psychology, rehabilitation, or social work, including support for families; ability to assist clients in identifying and obtaining available benefits and social and community services; ability to assist social workers with developing, organizing, and conducting programs to prevent and resolve problems relevant to substance abuse, human relationships, rehabilitation, or dependent care. Specialized Experience for GS-7 - planning and carrying out the successive steps and handling behavioral problems in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted practices within the interdisciplinary health care team; interact with psychologists, nurses, social workers, community resources, residents and/or their families; facilitate group activities; recognize and respond appropriately to deviations from normal behavior; provide non-professional counseling services, including behavioral issues associated with substance use and mental health disorders in adolescents. Education There are no education requirements, however, you may qualify with education in lieu of experience or combination of experience and education: For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that (a) included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects directly related to the work of the position; (b) included a major in social behavior, human behavior, or health care or; (c) was supplemented by experience in activities that afforded the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate the skills required by the position. (The supplementary experience may have been gained, for example, in part-time or summer employment, in volunteer social welfare or recreation programs, or in community organizations. For GS-7: One full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position meets the requirement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. This position has promotion potential to the GS-7 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval.
