WSP USA Manager, Counsel in United States

WSP’s dynamic and multiple-award winning legal team is committed to providing world class legal services to our managers and consultants practicing in the field of engineering, environmental and construction services. WSP is currently seeking an In-House Legal Counsel with relevant experience gained from a top law firm or in-house environment and a strong legal background in one or more of the following areas: engineering/design, construction management in the transportation, water, and infrastructure industry. This role will be part of WSP’s in-house legal and compliance team supporting the East Region and reporting to an office in the East Region. As a team member, you will have opportunity to experience a wide range of practices supporting the organization’s legal and compliance needs as the organization continues to grow.

Effective communication skills, self-motivation and the ability to work independently within an entrepreneurial team environment are essential. As a key member of the legal team, you have 7+ years of experience with drafting, reviewing, and the negotiation of engineering and construction contracts, procurement contracts, commercial agreements and associated documents.

We are seeking a motivated candidate with an excellent ability to grasp legal and business issues quickly, communicate well and operate closely with Operations Managers. Equally important, the candidate must be willing and able to provide practical and constructive legal advice to Operations Managers in a fast-paced, dynamic business environment. An overview of your role will include:

  • Working closely with all business units and providing a strategic blend of business and legal advice

  • Read and review client contracts, identify major contract requirements, responsible parties, work scope, and take action or incorporate as needed in draft agreements, teaming agreements, NDAs, and other contractual documents.

  • Negotiation of consulting, engineering, and construction contracts

  • Pro-active risk mitigation strategies

  • Support claims managed within the Region.

  • Support Region Counsel with legal training and development for project team members.

  • Help identify need for process and practice improvements to meet evolving business requirements.

You will have a background in:

  • 7+ years of related industry experience including experience drafting, editing, contracts, preferably in the engineering, infrastructure, or commercial construction sectors.

  • Working knowledge of CPFF, T&M, FFP compensation types.

  • Law degree from a recognized institution and membership in good standing with a bar

  • In-house experience working with an international organization

  • An enthusiastic collaborator who will work well with others in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to provide sound business and legal advice to all levels of the company

  • Personable, critical thinker able to partner with Operations Managers

  • Driven to achieve excellent results and win-win negotiations for Operations and Clients

  • Ability to work independently and under time pressured deadlines

  • Competent computing skills

  • Excellent and efficient problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication skills – must be able to coordinate between multiple departments and project teams.

  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, set priorities and see projects through completion.

  • Strong business acumen and excellent judgment
