Description

This is a professional position responsible for the delivery of health care to inmates. This field involves some risk to personal safety and may involve increased exposure to communicable diseases.

Essential Functions

The requirements for this position include, but are not limited to, those outlined below.   • The incumbent performs basic and intermediate medical evaluations, physical examinations, and assessments of the inmate population;

  • Provides daily nursing, first aid, and emergency medical care and treatment in accordance with Physician approved protocols;

  • Conducts daily nurse sick call;

  • Administers medications, to include injections in accordance with the Medical Director's orders;

  • Controls, issues, and monitors the use of medications in accordance with the Code of Virginia;

  • Performs venipuncture and collects other laboratory specimens;

  • Operates an oxygen tank, current drug system, centrifuge, blood pressure equipment, syringe, blood glucose testing equipment, otoscope, pulse ox meter, nebulizer, peak flow meters, AED, EKG, thermometer, stethoscope, IV equipment, all venipuncture equipment, fetal doppler, fire extinguisher, PPE, radio and common office equipment;

  • Completes reports and medical forms, assists with physician's sick call, and performs other medical duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General and intermediate knowledge of both the common and more complicated medical practices, procedures and techniques associated with standard physician examination;

  • Intermediate knowledge of medical diagnostic processes;

  • Ability to administer medications, perform basic and intermediate treatments, first aid, and emergency procedures as prescribed or as necessary;

  • Ability to follow technical oral and written instructions in exact detail;

  • Ability to maintain and document accurate, concise and clear records and reports;

  • Ability to understand and strictly adhere to the security guidelines and the Code of Ethics required in this facility.

Experience, Education and Availability:

  • One (1) year of LPN experience in a clinic environment preferred, but not required;

  • Must possess a valid Driver's License;

  • Must be available for on-duty call during weekends, holidays and other non-duty times;

  • Must have graduated successfully from an accredited School of Nursing and have or is awaiting Virginia licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN).

Supplemental Information

Automatic Disqualifiers:

  • Incomplete application/document submission;

  • Drug use of any kind after age 30 or within the last three years;

  • Drunk Driving or DUI conviction within the last three years;

  • Misdemeanor conviction involving moral misconduct or indecency after age 30 or within the last five years;

  • Any felony, domestic assault or domestic violence conviction; or

  • Driver's license suspension or revocation within the last three years;

  • Inability tosuccessfully pass the established NRADC pre-employment screen(s) such as but not limited to a urine drug screen and polygraph examination.

Physical Demands:

Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Walking, talking, stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, sitting and gripping. Incumbent may be required on occasion to move and lift up to 30 lbs.
