SUMMARY: This is an entry level, professional position, responsible for the delivery of health care to inmates.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The requirements for this position include, but are not limited to, those outlined below.   • Performs basic and intermediate medical evaluations, physical examinations, and assessments of the inmate population.

  • Provides daily nursing, first aid, and emergency medical care and treatment in accordance with physician-approved protocols.

  • Conducts daily nurse sick call.

  • Administers medications and injections in accordance with the Medical Director's orders.

  • Controls, issues, and monitors the use of medications in accordance with the Code of Virginia.

  • Performs venipuncture and collects other laboratory specimens.

  • Completes reports, medical forms, and assists with physician's sick call.

  • Performs other medical duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION: Must have graduated successfully from an accredited school of nursing and have or awaiting a Virginia licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN).

EXPERIENCE: Entry level position but one (1) year of LPN experience in a clinic environment preferred.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of both the common and more complicated medical practices, procedures and techniques associated with standard physician examination. General knowledge of medical diagnostic processes. Ability to administer medications, perform basic and intermediate treatments, first aid, and emergency procedures as prescribed or as necessary. Ability to follow technical oral and written instructions in exact detail. Ability to maintain and document accurate, concise and clear records and reports. Ability to understand and strictly adhere to the security guidelines and Code of Ethics required in this facility.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Utilizes oxygen tank, current drug system, centrifuge, blood pressure equipment, syringe, blood glucose testing equipment, otoscope, pulse ox meter, nebulizer, peak flow meters, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Electrocardiography (EKG), thermometer, stethoscope, intravenous equipment, all venipuncture equipment, and fetal dopplers. Common office equipment such as copy machine, fax, printer, computer, telephone system are used. Operates all safety and security equipment such as: fire extinguishers, personal protection equipment, intercom, and radio.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND/OR REGISTRATIONS: Must have graduated successfully from an accredited School of Nursing and have or awaiting a Virginia licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN). Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must maintain telephonic means for emergency contact.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Requires moderate physical effort including but not limited to walking, talking, stooping, sitting, kneeling, bending, reaching and gripping. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g., business office, light traffic). Position requires being on call for emergencies and non-business hours – including holidays, weekends and other non-duty times.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work involves some risk to personal safety and may involve increased exposure to communicable diseases.
