The Classification Specialist I prepares and maintains job descriptions for each position in the organization. Reviews classification actions. Answers general compensation and classification inquiries in a timely manner and creates effective business partnerships. Acts as a Hub contact for Class & Comp related items. Ensures adherence to established organizational policies.

What you need to know

Salary: $50,100 annually

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • One year of experience in compensation administration, human resources, customer service, or closely related field.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Analytical and report writing skills. Oral, written, and presentation communication skills. Ability to deal with sensitive information in a confidential manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong database administration and spreadsheet skills.

  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) designation.

  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification. Two years of experience in compensation administration, human resources, or closely related field.

  • Experience in applying and interpreting FLSA regulations.

  • Experience with database, spreadsheet, and word processing programs.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or Business Administration, including coursework in compensation administration.

  • Workday knowledge and experience.

  • TAMU experience.

Essential Duties/Tasks

Review of Workday Actions:

  • Prepares and maintains job descriptions for each position in the organization. Reviews classification actions, such as:

  • Create Position

  • Edit Position Restrictions

  • Change Job

  • Internal Promotion and Transfer

  • Switch Primary Job

  • Business Title Change

  • Add Job

  • Assesses jobs and their respective duties to determine classification as exempt or nonexempt. Maintains knowledge of relevant state and federal employment regulations, classification and compensation policies. Reviews and approves Dual Employment requests to determine applicability of overtime liabilities in accordance with the FLSA.

  • Approves Request Compensation Change and One Time Payment requests in Workday based off signed documentation.

Hub Support:

  • Answers general compensation and classification inquiries in a timely manner and creates effective business partnerships. Acts as a Hub contact for Class & Comp related items. Attends Hub related meetings and/or visits hubs weekly.

  • Assists with the advisement of management on applicable state and federal employment regulations, classification and compensation policies.

  • Monitors emails in ticketing system and responds to Hub assigned inquiries. Assists with inquiries from Recruitment regarding posting qualifications, duties, and salary.

  • Assists with providing on-demand training to the HR team, management and employees on classification and compensation programming, which may include presenting material.

  • May provide the Class & Comp office trainer material for standardized training and/or updates to training provided.

Special Projects:

  • Assists in drafting Texas A&M University generic job descriptions.

  • Works with department contacts on gathering details on new titles and/or revisions to titles in the System-wide Pay Plan.

  • Assists with desk audits.

  • Assists with interviews and surveying employees and managers to gather and document job, organizational, and occupational information including duties, responsibilities, and skills required by each job.

Other:

  • May represent the Classification and Compensation Office on committees or meetings as required.

  • Provides recommendations to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and forms.

  • Provides recommendations to the Classification and Compensation website.

  • Ensures adherence to established organizational policies.

  • Provides excellent customer service to all employees. Maintains a high level of confidentiality.

  • Provides customer assistance in the use of Workday system including troubleshooting user issues and providing help to users by phone and email.
