Empire State University seeks experienced and dedicated Academic Advisors (State Title: Academic Advisor) to provide academic advising services to our undergraduate students. Working as part of an experienced advising team, the successful candidates will develop expertise across a range of advising and mentoring activities in support of our students. These activities include transcript review, recommending appropriate courses, cultivating relationships with assigned students, referring students to appropriate university resources, and helping students build academic degree programs that align with their professional and personal goals.

Specific job duties include:

  • Manage an active caseload of advisees from first enrollment to graduation, participating in proactive outreach and advisement.

  • Develop and maintain mastery of the university's academic program requirements, policies, and procedures.

  • Work closely with students to develop sound associate and/or bachelor's degree programs that are built around a student's academic, professional, and intellectual goals.

  • Develop an understanding of, and guide students through, identification of university level prior learning that may be eligible for academic credit, following established university procedure.

  • Teach sections of the university's course on Educational Planning to one's assigned advisees/mentees where applicable by program.

  • Conduct unofficial transcript reviews for prospective students.

  • Provide first term course advising to incoming students and collaborate with various departments and individuals to help promote first term enrollment.

  • Participate in regularly scheduled meetings for department updates, team building, professional development, governance, and university development.

    Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree from a regionally accredited US university or comparable non-US university.

  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in the higher educational setting with a role specific to academic advisement or student development.

  • Excellent and effective communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work within a collaborative academic environment with faculty and staff from multiple departments.

  • Desire and skills to engage with undergraduate learners who may not regularly visit campus locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of adult learning, learning technologies and online pedagogies.

  • Experience with computer databases and web-based communications platforms including Banner, CRM, or other data management and tracking tools.

  • Previous college teaching experience, preferably in one of the academic disciplines offered in the School or Business or the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

  • Prior knowledge of and experience working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners, particularly in online settings.

  • Prior experience working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Special Information:

  • May involve occasional travel.

  • Regular involvement in governance and committee work is expected.

  • VISA sponsorship is not available for these positions.
