Animal Shelter Technician - Paws Animal Shelter 1535 W US Hwy 36, Urbana, Ohio 43078    (937) 653-6233 Position Description - Part-time (4 Days/Week)

Under direction of the Shelter Manager, performs animal care tasks and technical services relating to the maintenance, and upkeep of the shelter. Provides for the health, welfare, care and wellbeing of all the cats and kittens at the shelter and maintains a clean and disease-free facility for all our animals. 

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.   1. Assesses animal health for any signs of illness in assigned rooms. Observes animal behavior during exercise and play time. Ensures welfare and proper care of animals within the facility is maintained at all times. 
  2. Prepares a cage with water, food, bedding, and enrichment toys for all incoming cats and kittens. 
  3. Facilitates the adoption process by answering questions and showing potential adopters around the shelter when the manager is unable to do so. 
  4. Cleans and maintains cat rooms and all shelter areas daily. This will be done in accordance with cleaning protocols, and prop0er disease control requirements. Feeds, waters, and provides continuous care for shelter residents. Specifically: 

Feed cats, ensuring that the proper food is given to each cat, and in the proper quantity (don't overfeed, as obesity is an on-going challenge for shelter cats). All water and food dishes need to be in easy reach for "residents".  Wash food and water dishes and litter boxes Do laundry. Shake out blankets before putting them in washer. Keep laundry area as clean and organized as possible.  Clean and stock bathrooms Clean front lobby and ensure all public areas free from clutter Sweep and keep garage area clean Stainless steel areas to be cleaned with SS cleaner. Clean counters when area is finished. Move items when cleaning. 

  1. Dispense medications to animals requiring it, and log all action on the med form. 
  2. Brush animals daily. Play with them as time allows. Spend extra time trying to socialize very shy and frightened animals so they can be adopted. 
  3. Maintain an upbeat and positive attitude with fellow staff members and all members of the public.  Be punctual every day and stay busy. When you complete your daily assigned tasks, check with shelter manager for any additional work that needs to be done. If nothing, work on animal socialization. 
  4. Performs other duties as required. 

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Primarily work indoors. Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull, or lift medium weights (20-50 pounds). Moderate exposure to disagreeable elements such as strong odors, animal feces, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, and grease. Exposure to health and occupational hazards. Intermittent exposure to stressful situations as a result of dealing with the public and/or unfriendly animals. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. 

Experience: Will train, no animal control experience is necessary. Must have a work history that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. 

Licenses and/or Certifications: Must possess a valid driver's license. A valid Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to hire and be maintained throughout employment.
