TITLE/SALARY GRADE: Service & Repair Assistant (Motor Equipment) SG 9

SALARY: $40,193 (Note: current or reconstructed salary for State employees in accordance with NYS Audit and Control)

DURATION: Permanent - Full time

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

A Service & Repair Assistant (Motor Equipment) performs a variety of semiskilled maintenance, repair, detailing and related activities as assigned in the motor equipment and mechanical trades, including but not limited to the following:

  • Performs routine tasks in the repair, maintenance, cleaning, and servicing of automotive and mechanical equipment;

  • Performs minor engine repairs, as well as tune-ups;

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections of vehicles and equipment following preventive maintenance schedules;

  • Following specific instructions, incumbents assist journey-level positions in making major mechanical repairs;

  • May operate a tow truck and other types of motor vehicles or equipment and serves as car, van, truck and/or bus driver for College, as needed;

  • Following operating manuals and specific instructions, makes repairs and performs routine service and preventive maintenance inspections on a variety of mechanical equipment such as laundry and kitchen equipment, water pumps and circulators and sterilizers to insure efficient and trouble-free operation.

    Job Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Non-competitive: Two years of experience in mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course. When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

OPERATIONAL NEEDS: Flexible hours within typical Departmental operating hours (Monday-Friday from 6:00am-2:30pm). This is a Full time position based on a 40-hour workweek. May be asked to work outside of these typical hours based on operational needs (ex: serving as car, van, truck and/or bus driver for College activities) may also be asked to aid in mechanical service and repairs at our regional campuses located throughout NYS (Huntington Forest, Ranger School, and Hieberg Forest)

JOB REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

  • Ability to wash and detail vehicles

  • Perform medium to heavy manual labor

  • Use hand tools and operate motor driven equipment

  • Understand and follow verbal and simple written instructions

  • Perform more simple and routine tasks independently

  • Within 6 months of hire, obtain NYS DMV vehicle inspector's license

  • Have a minimum of a Class B license with passenger endorsement, and be willing to upgrade license for changing operational needs

  • The successful candidate will be subject to the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (OTETA) which require pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random and return to duty tests.

Approval must be granted by Civil Service prior to filling this position pending clearance of re-deployment roster, transfer list, preferred list, reemployment roster, or placement roster.
