EH&S seeks an Assistant Biosafety Officer (ABSO) to support Stanford University’s biological safety programs, reporting to the institutional biosafety officer (BSO). The ABSO supervises a team of biosafety specialists who provide protocol review, consultation, and in-field services to the research community. The role assists with the design, development, management and improvement of Biosafety & Biosecurity (B&B) programs which apply broadly across Stanford’s research enterprise, including the School of Medicine (SoM). The ABSO enables technical, regulatory, and administrative support to Stanford’s institutional biosafety committee, the Administrative Panel on Biosafety (APB), which oversees and approves the use of recombinant DNA and specific biohazardous materials. The role helps ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements. Maintains close and productive relationships with principal investigators (PIs) seeking to remain on the cutting edge of research science.

The incumbent serves asa leadingsubject matter expertwithin Research Safety. Coordinates closely with faculty, researchers, and staff to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, enhance the culture of safety, and reduce risk in research settings. Through continuous improvement initiatives, the role advances the teaching and research missionof Stanford University.

In this position you will :

  • Develop, implement, and oversee program changes; interpret policies and procedures as they apply to environmental, health, and safety practices.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in one or more areas of environmental, health, and safety specialization; lead technical meetings; represent assigned area and/or specialty in meetings and interact with internal and external customers.

  • Directly supervise and provide guidance and development to individual contributors, including contractors and matrixed staff, external to the organization.

  • Ensure programs and practices are in compliance with the appropriate statutes and regulations and environmental, health, and safety requirements are met.

  • Investigate and resolve problems, questions, or complaints received from within the organization, customers, government regulatory agencies, etc.

  • Ensure environmental, health, and safety inspections are conducted, corrective actions are completed on time, and all necessary documentation is maintained.

  • Develop, maintain, audit, and evaluate current policies, procedures, and documentation for regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.

  • May represent the university as a designated safety officer when mandated by regulatory requirements.

In this position you will also:

  • Manage and supervise B&B program staff in a diverse, fast-moving research enterprise.

  • Establish B&B policies, guidelines, processes and procedures to assure robust risk management.

  • Interpret and apply regulatory requirements and set institutional standards for work with biohazardous materials

  • Support the University’s compliance programs in bloodborne pathogens and aerosol transmissible diseases for research settings

  • Collaborate with stakeholders including the Dean of Research, department chairs, university safety partners, the EH&S Occupational Health Center, student and post-doc service organizations, and others to ensure program uptake and engagement

  • Facilitate risk assessment and registration application processes for rDNA, prion-like proteins, and biological agent protocols

  • Assist researchers with identification of appropriate biological laboratory containment levels, and strategies for hazard assessment and control

  • Support plans review, construction and commissioning of high containment and specialized laboratory research facilities, and compliant operation of specialized biocontainment facilities

  • Serve as a member of designated research compliance committees

  • Assist development of training programs and biosafety-related information and communications

  • Use data and formulate metrics to recommend corrective and preventative practices and procedures related to biological safety

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and five years of related progressively responsible experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree and/or certification(s) or experience may be required for some programs.

To be successful in this position, you need:

  • Ability to manage environmental, health, and safety functions and staff, or programs and/or staff in a professional service environment.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Ability to interpret and apply regulations.

  • Ability to ensure environmental, health, and safety program compliance.

  • Ability to assist with conducting environmental health and safety related risk assessment, mitigation, and crisis management.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization.

  • Ability to lead professionally, be on call, and to respond in emergency/crisis situations.

Additional preferred skills include:

  • Strong understanding of occupational/public health and safety principles and applications, with demonstrated competencies with program and process development/improvement.

  • Organizational communications expertise in group facilitation as well as successful application of websites, social media, and other online strategies.

  • Excellent leadership skills and experience with effective implementation of health/safety-related operational programs.

  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and project management abilities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to develop and deliver effective participatory health and safety training content utilizing

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks.

  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.

  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.

  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.

  • May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals

On-site/Hybrid positions:

The expected pay range for this position is $136,000 to $160,000 per annum.
