SVM - Instructor, Pathobiology
St. George’s University invites applicants for a full-time Instructor position in the department of Pathobiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 7/1/2024.
Job Description
Objective
Contribute to SVM research and service, and enhance the knowledge, growth, and overall development of veterinary and graduate students by fostering engagement and education, with a primary focus on aquatic animal health.
Essential Functions
Research and Scholarly Activities:
Actively engage in scholarly activities that support collaborative research at the SVM. This includes performing fieldwork, sample collection, sample processing (including DNA and RNA extraction), molecular analyses, and data evaluation. Areas of research emphasis includes host-pathogen interactions, pathology, and ecology, of fish and sea turtles.
Provide graduate and veterinary students research opportunities, mentorship, and training
Service
Manage the daily operations of the Aquatic Animal Medicine Research Laboratory (AAMRL) under the direction of the AAMRL Director. This includes husbandry of fish used in research and teaching, operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, supply inventory and ordering, and archive of frozen biologic samples.
Support clinical and diagnostic services including examination and treatment of moribund and stranded animals and necropsy and ancillary testing of mortalities
Participate in the following University activities:
Faculty Senate
Departmental Meetings (when required)
Departmental Faculty evaluations (when required)
SVM Faculty Meetings (when required)
Special Committee Assignments (as assigned by the Dean)
Outreach efforts in the local community (i.e., One Health One Medicine Program, CaribVet)
Instructional Activities:
Deliver content in veterinary and graduate courses including lectures and laboratories in aquatic animal medicine.
Participate in the graduate and professional curriculum
Participate in developing the syllabus outline by providing objectives and examination questions.
Assist in conducting and examination grading in compliance with the SVM Examination Policy
General
Take responsibility as an advisor of assigned students
Establish appropriate opportunities for interaction with students in addition to scheduled lessons. (Ten hours per week of faculty-student interaction are required of faculty not teaching in a laboratory and six office hours for those who have laboratory assignments)
Qualification
BSc with documented experience in aquatic species
MSc or DVM preferred
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
With a basic knowledge and first experience and/or eagerness to learn
General experience in molecular biology techniques (PCR, real time PCR, libraries) managing sample storage, inventory, and oversight of laboratory equipment
Excellence in interactive small group training
Excellent written communication skills

Hours and Travel
A typical work week is 40 hours Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm.
Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the core work hours between 8 am – 5 pm on campus for in-person classroom/laboratory, diagnostics, and research, otherwise available by email or remote means for meetings.
Travel for medical/personal and professional meetings is granted by request and approval of the administration.
