SVM - Instructor, Anesthesia

St. George’s University invites applicants for a full-time Instructor position, in the department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 8/1/2024.

Job Description

Objective

Assist the students' instruction in Small Animal Anesthesia Labs and anesthesia/surgery rotations at the Small Animal Clinic (SAC).

Essential Functions

Instructional Activities:

  • Participation in different anesthesia skills courses across the curriculum.

  • Instruction, scholarship and clinical service are expected.

    Junior Surgery and Anesthesia Laboratory

  • Receiving and evaluation of patients for surgery labs

  • Maintenance and management of anesthesia/monitoring equipment

  • Anesthesia protocols planning

  • Participation in preop and postop rounds

    Instruction:

  • Instruction of students from premedication (catheter placement, induction, intubation), patient initial prep, basic anesthesia maintenance, transport into the surgery suite, and supervision of the monitoring of the surgical procedure (neuter or spay), participation in pre-anesthesia/surgical rounds.

  • Grading of students performance

  • Medical record maintenance and grading

  • Assist in new and/or ongoing research endeavors.

  • Assisting in technician education

  • Eventually, Principal Investigator of new projects

    Anesthesiology labs (SAMS 520)

  • Instruct students in the laboratory and all practical aspects of the course (i.e., anesthesia machines assembly, intubation, assessing anesthesia equipment, monitoring, etc.)

  • Administer laboratory assessments.

  • Assist in conducting and grading of examinations in compliance with the SVM Examination Policy

    SAC Clinical Rotations (SAMS 528)

  • Participation in all anesthesia related activities at the SAC.

  • Assist in monitoring all surgery and diagnostic related procedures.

  • Supervise and evaluate students rotating through anesthesia

  • Assist with elective and emergency procedures occurring at the SAC that require anesthesia assistance, apart from those related to clinical rotations

    Research and Scholarly Activities:

  • Active engagement in a research program in the area of expertise which will provide also student research opportunities.

  • Develop and contribute to extension and continuing education programs, in collaboration with other departments and/or other schools.

    Service

    Participate in the following University activities:

  • Departmental Reviews (when required)

  • Faculty Meetings (when required)

  • Special Committee Assignments (as assigned by the Dean)

  • Outreach efforts in the local community

  • Faculty Senate

    General:

    Other activities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting in the Health Certificate clinics at the end of the term

  • Assisting in any SGUSVM related research clinics (One Health One Medicine, etc.) held throughout the term

  • Participation of 6th Term Final Spay/Neuter clinics (K9 and Feline Speuter clinic days)

  • Establish appropriate opportunities for interaction with students that are consistent with the SVM Faculty Handbook.

    Qualifications

    DVM or equivalent degree; MSc preferable.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

  • This is a full time position in the Caribbean island of Grenada.

  • Candidates must be fully vaccinated with a WHO approved vaccine, and be willing to show proof of vaccination to be considered for employment.
