The Senior Medical Assistant provides support and clinic coordination of multiple patient care services, exercising independence in the planning and accomplishment of a wide spectrum of clerical duties. Responsibilities include: scheduling of new patients, follow-up clinic appointments, subsequent treatments, and requested diagnostic tests, acquiring of insurance verifications, referrals and authorizations, preparing and maintaining the patient's medical record, reconciling billing issues, answering multiple phone lines and triaging phone calls. Obtains and records vital signs and other appropriate information, such as height, weight, drug allergies, current medications and presenting problem. Schedules multiple, sequential procedures and diagnostic tests as directed by the physician. When scheduling appointments, coordinates clinic schedule to optimize provider and care team availability on multiple campuses. May draw blood specimens, label, and prepare specimens for processing. May assist in diagnostic tests and clinical procedures to appropriate level of training as established in procedures. Obtains non-invasive body fluid specimens. Under the supervision of the practitioner, informs patient of lab results, calls in prescriptions to pharmacies, and returns practitioners phone messages. Documents all interactions in the patient's medical record. Uses SMC computer systems efficiently and effectively. Is able to learn new computer applications as they evolve. Schedules outside clinic appointments, diagnostic tests, non-invasive procedures, and surgical procedures. Coordinates with other departments involved in patient appointments and care, such as transportation and interpreter services. Contacts patients regarding appointments or changes in appointments, as needed. May perform discharge follow-up phone calls, as necessary. Schedules inpatient admissions when requested. Acts as a courier between various departments for delivery and pick-up of confidential patient material and/or specimens. Completes initial prospectus on newly referred patients and distributes to the appropriate individuals. Obtains pertinent records/films in preparation for first visit, and scans them appropriately. Registers and consents patients, ensuring the completion of required forms, if necessary, at clinic site. Collects insurance co-pays as required by clinic site. Requests patient records as needed and scans them in a timely manner to the electronic medical record. Keeps patient exam rooms clean, orderly and stocked and maintains equipment if applicable; disposes of contaminated items according to Swedish Medical Center Exposure Control Plan; anticipates practitioners' need for medications, supplies, and equipment and plans accordingly.
