Amazon Principal Applied Scientist in Seattle, Washington

Description

Amazon is looking for world class Principal Applied Scientist to join its AWS AI Labs with expertise in recommender systems/personalization and differential privacy. You will be leading a team of applied scientists developing robust and scalable machine learning solutions for recommendation and personalization services. You will interact in a cross-functional capacity with product and engineering leaders, as well as with our customers and with the academic community. You will be at the heart of a growing and exciting focus area for AWS and work with acclaimed engineers and world-class scientists.

Key job responsibilities

  • As a Principal Applied Scientist, you will lead a team of junior and mid-level applied scientists. You have the scientific depth to set strategic directions, and define successful execution plans.

  • Develop science and engineering craftmanship and drive continued scientific innovation as a thought leader and practitioner.

  • You will keep your technical skills current to be able to lead architecture and design discussions, take part in deep-dive troubleshooting exercises and drive technical post-mortem discussions to identify the root cause of complex issues.

  • Set a vision for your team and create product roadmaps. Use project management skills to deliver product roadmap items and other cross-team projects.

  • Hire and develop top talents, provide technical and career development guidance to both scientists and engineers in the organization.

  • Leverage industry best practices to establish repeatable applied science practices, principles & processes.

Basic Qualifications

  1. PhD degree in computer science, statistics, engineering, mathematics or another relevant discipline

  2. 10+ years of experience using AI/ML solutions to address large scale recommendation systems / differential privacy/ personalization

  3. Mentors and trains the research scientist community on complex technical issues.

  4. Experience in applying machine learning to real-world problems, with demonstrated impact on product or service outcomes

  5. Excellent written and verbal technical communication with an ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences

  6. Skilled in C++ (or other high-level programming language) as well as Python

Preferred Qualifications

  1. 5+ years of experience building machine learning and analytic applications.

  2. Experience in reinforcement learning and natural language processing

  3. PhD and 7+ years of relevant industry or academic research experience

  4. Hands-on experience with at least two of the following: reinforcement learning, causal inference, differential privacy

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $159,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
