GE Vernova Lead NPI Controls Engineer - Energy Storage in Schenectady, New York

Job Description Summary

The Lead Controls Engineer – Energy Storage Systems works as part of the NPI Controls Engineering Team in an international environment and will be responsible for development, implementation and maintenance of BESS solutions within Solar & Storage Solutions. This includes but it is not limited to AC systems, DC systems, Power Conversion and Plant-level controls up to and including interfaces with upper level customer control systems.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Development, validation, and installation of all BESS systems including auxiliary systems e.g. chillers, BMS

  • Be involved in all phases of software & controls development from product definition to production release

  • Drive performance and reliability enhancements back to the product

  • Participate actively in design, code reviews, testing and software validation

  • Understand the rules and regulations associated with regional electricity markets

  • Support problem identification and resolution of new and installed products

  • Support on-site start up and integration of system controls

  • Have close interaction with customers to drive requirements and customer satisfaction

  • Interface with senior leadership with confidence and clarity

  • Develop, improve, and administrate customer overview and operational training material for the energy storage

  • Work across engineering and services organizations to prepare documentation for installation, commissioning, and operations for use by internal GE employees and our customers

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering / Science or in STEM from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with developing software & controls for energy storage systems.

Desired Characteristics

  • Demonstrated expertise in energy storage controls, validation and verification, formal design methodology, systems integration, advanced controls or related technologies.

  • Knowledge of or familiarity with GE’s MarkVIe product family and of GE’s Cimplicity software (SCADA).

  • Experienced embedded firmware developer.

  • Knowledge of power conversion systems and controls.

  • Knowledge of communication networks (copper, FO) and their design, SW and Hardware.

  • Familiarity with standard industrial protocols such as OPC-UA and Modbus, as well as standard messaging protocols such as MQTT.

  • Experience with Matlab, Simulink, and/or Python.

  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodology.

  • Technical project leadership experience.

  • Advanced Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.

  • Experience working cross-functionally between Engineering, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Logistics, Product Management, etc.

  • Ability to summarize and communicate complex technical information.

  • Strong problem analysis and resolution skills.

  • Curiosity, passion for excellence, drive to deliver on-time.

  • Can present technical plans in voice of customer.

  • Self-start attitude is strongly requested.
