Summary

The Family Support Counselor serves as a resource support to the FSCs responding to referrals ofpotential organ and mutual organ/tissue donors and will serve as the main point of contact for the FSCsworking on active referrals. We serve the entire state of South Carolina, and the ideal candidate can live anywhere in the state.

This position can be located anywhere in South Carolina

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Serves on a rotating call schedule in order to provide 24/7 resource support to the Family SupportCounselors (FSC II) that respond to patient referrals in our Designated Service Area (DSA) hospitals.

  2. Serves as a Team Lead during referrals of patients:

  • Receives referral notification from the Administrator on Call and assigns appropriate staff.

  • Receives reports and updates from the FSCs specific to family dynamics on referrals of

  • potential organ/tissue donors and provides feedback/assistance to work through the

  • challenges and barriers.

  • Reports clinical information to the CDC or AOC so they can determine medical suitability of the potential donor.

  • Coordinates the pre-approach huddle with the Manager of Family Support Services on all potential organ/tissue donors.

  • Collaborates with other staff members during the donation process (e.g. FSCs, CDCs, AOC)

  • Documents in the EMR in real time, as required.

  • Initiates Immediate Correction and Non-Conformance reports as needed, in real time.

  1. Assists Manager of Family Support Services in development of training opportunities and leadingcase review discussions.

  2. Collaborates with the Manager of Family Support Services in tracking and documenting the EffectiveRequest process.

  3. Provides field observation feedback of the Family Support Counselors to evaluate their competencyand assist in their professional development.

  4. Responds to referrals of potential organ/tissue donors, assesses family dynamics, provides emotionalsupport, educates the donor family and hospital staff, and secures written authorization for organand/or tissue recovery.

  5. Serves as a preceptor to new Family Support Counselors.

  6. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications, Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree preferred;

  • At least 3 years of experience as a Family Support Counselor for an Organ Procurement Organization

  • Grief counselor certification is a plus;

  • Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus;

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience working directly with donorfamilies and advocating for organ donation.
