Exploratorium Grants Manager in San Francisco, California

SUMMARY

The Exploratorium seeks an experienced grants professional to join its Institutional Advancement Department, a dynamic and fast-paced team of 23 staff who together are responsible for raising over $20 million each year. The Grants Manager is responsible for four main strands of work: 1) developing and implementing a fundraising strategy focused on private foundations; 2) researching, developing, writing, and editing competitive proposals to foundations and government agencies for Exploratorium programs; 3) working with senior program staff to clarify grant needs and opportunities within the museum; and 4) cultivating and stewarding relationships with institutional funders. This individual will also be responsible for identifying new funding prospects.

 

The work is fast paced with frequent deadlines, requires the ability to work independently and closely with a wide range of staff. A successful candidate will have superior writing skills and proven success with raising funds from institutions. They must also possess sophisticated project management and proposal budgeting skills. This position is expected to manage and grow a grants portfolio of approximately 40 - 60 foundation prospects and 4 - 5 government prospects. This position will be part of a four person team responsible for enacting a multi-year grants fundraising strategy. This position reports to the Director of Grants.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop and implement a fundraising strategy and plan for private foundation funders.

  • Work closely with program staff and finance staff to develop projects, proposals, budgets, and reports, including project management of proposal development processes for large government grants that include multiple stakeholders.

  • Write, rewrite, edit, format, and/or proofread proposals and reports.

  • Maintain detailed knowledge of a broad range of programs throughout the museum.

  • Manage cultivation and stewardship activities.

  • Clarify grant needs and opportunities within the museum.

  • Undertake additional writing and budget duties as required.

  • Other duties as assigned.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree and 5 - 7years of experience as a lead grant writer or grants manager, preferably in a complex, multifaceted, nonprofit educational environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience

  • Demonstrated track record of handling a variety of constituencies, managing multiple tasks simultaneously, and thriving in a complex environment with multiple priorities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong project management skills

  • Strong proposal budgeting skills

  • Demonstrated success developing and writing grant proposals for government agencies and large national private foundations

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended period of time 

  • Ability to move from place to place, use general office equipment, lift and carry up to 35 pounds short distances

    This is a regular, full-time (37.5 hours per week), exempt, union position that includes benefits. The starting range for this role is $43.56 to $46.11.
