St. John Fisher College Career and Academic Planning Advisor in Rochester, New York

Overview:

St. John Fisher University is an independent, liberal arts institution that provides a transformative education to approximately 3,800 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students each year. Across its five Schools, Fisher offers nearly 40 majors in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, business, education, and nursing; 11 pre-professional programs; and master’s and doctoral programs in business, nursing, education, pharmacy, and public health. The University’s residential campus boasts a robust living and learning community and a successful intercollegiate athletics program. Job Responsibilities:

  • Advise and counsel students – individually and in groups – on issues related to identifying academic and career goals, academic planning, personal development, problem solving, and maximizing their University experience. Model and teach the use of resources for learning about academic programs, careers of interest, and course registration so they become owners of their educational journey who collaborate with others to achieve their goals. (75%)

  • Review and respond daily to issues through early alert/case management system, email and phone. (10%)

  • Meet with prospective and admitted students and their parents/family members during campus programs, e.g., Open House, Orientation, etc. Provide information to students and parents, and make referrals where appropriate, for services offered either by the University or by outside organizations for the benefit of the student. (5%)

  • Register portion of incoming first-year student class. Prepare, organize, and maintain appropriate resources, reports and statistical summaries. Collaborate with and assess performance of assigned student Peer Mentors. (5%)

  • Participate in professional development activities as required. Serve on committees as assigned. Other duties as assigned by the department. (5%)

Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, related to counseling, human development or education preferred.

  • Experience working with young adults from diverse backgrounds

  • Demonstrated ability to use online tools

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills

Work Hours:

This is an exempt 12-month position with 35 hours a week office schedule. Ability to work some nontraditional work hours including evenings, holidays or weekends as needed.
