Kaiser Permanente Manager Health Information Managment Operations Coding - MUST live in WA in Renton, Washington

Job Summary:

Responsible for day-to-day management of the HIM Operations coders, including recruiting, hiring, training, mentoring and performance management. Leads the HIM Operations Coding quality monitoring plan, and assures that department targets are met. Responsible for assuring that coding practices in the unit meet all correct coding and compliance standards.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Leads and manages the HIM Operations coding functions, which includes coding for hospital facility and professional services, ambulatory surgical services, Urgent Care, ancillary and clinic-based services. Identifies staffing needs, develops recruitment and retention plans to assure consistent staffing. Manages human resources, including training, performance management, and continuing education. Monitors coder performance against established standards, goals and metrics. Contracts with outside coding vendors when necessary. Provides management oversight to the HIM Coding Supervisors.

  • Develops and manages the HIM Coding Operations quality plan, including establishing the quality review approach and calendar. Contracts with outside entities, as needed, to provide coding quality reviews. Directs work of HIM Auditor/Coding Trainer in conducting the reporting on the quality plan. Assures that coding standards are met. Develops remediation actions when standards are not met.

  • Assists HIM, Finance, WPMG leaders and others in the organization with analysis of coded data, and design and development of data reports. Performs analysis of coded data to facilitate decision making, and to identify risks and gaps. Designs processes and procedures to capture coded data to assure accurate, complete and timely capture and retrieval.

  • Responsible for assuring HIM Operations coding compliance. Works with HIM Coding Education, Patient Financial Services and the Department of Compliance and Ethics to identify and resolve questions. Assures that departmental policies and procedures are in place to support correct and compliance coding. Prepares or reviews regular reports of coding accuracy on behalf of HIM, Compliance and Ethics, or other requestors.

  • Works in partnership with Information Technology in managing encoders, coding and abstracting functionality, remote and vendor access, and other coding tools. Assures that staff are trained in the correct use of the applications. Maintains current knowledge of coding applications; recommends new functionality; actively participates in build and implementation of all systems that impact coding.

    Basic Qualifications:

    Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years of coding and/or management or supervision of production coding in a health care setting, including personnel management, quality and production management, and compliance responsibilities.

    Education

  • High School Diploma OR General Education Development (GED) required.

    License, Certification, Registration

  • Certified Professional Coder required at hire OR Certified Outpatient Coder required at hire OR Certified Coding Specialist - Physician Based required at hire OR Certified Professional Coder - Hospital Outpatient required at hire OR Registered Health Information Administrator required at hire OR Certified Coding Specialist required at hire OR Registered Health Information Technician required at hire

    Additional Requirements:

  • ICD, CPT and HCPCS coding knowledge; health care finance and compliance; HCCs, medical terminology, medical science.

  • Excel, Word, PowerPoint; encoders and/or on-line coding reference tools.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Eight (8) years of coding and/or management or supervision of production coding in a health care setting, including personnel management, quality and production management, and compliance responsibilities, with dual focus on facility and professional coding.

  • In-depth knowledge of both facility and professional services coding.

  • Associates degree in Healthcare related discipline, with a focus on coding and health information management.

  • Coursework in ICD and CPT coding, medical science, disease process, medical terminology, health care finance.
