Microsoft Corporation Server Performance Engineer - Microsoft Azure in Redmond, Washington

Get ready to operate at hyperscale!

We are building new systems to optimize the millions of server nodes underlying the Microsoft Azure cloud. You will be part of a dynamic and collaborative team chartered to understand and improve how hardware and software ingredients come together to form our Azure Virtual Machine (VM) products. Our work includes optimizing fleet performance, comparisons, developing tools that leverage AI, and providing input to hardware selection.

As a Server Performance Engineer - Microsoft Azure, in this role, you will work on detecting and addressing VM performance issues. You will find opportunities for improvement through internal testing as well as by working directly with Azure customers to understand their use cases. You will collaborate with various Microsoft teams and vendors to deliver performance optimizations for our customers. This opportunity will allow you to learn intricate details about how Azure works, what impacts performance when various hardware and software components come together, and how to create tests that can highlight both performance benefits and opportunities for improvement. In this role, you will actively collaborate with, and learn from, cloud, workload, and hardware experts.

Responsibilities

  • Identify experiments, tools, and methodology to test various scenarios to triage performance improvement opportunities.

  • Work with customers to understand performance requirements and configure performance measurements.

  • Identify areas for potential improvement in both software and hardware.

  • Clearly communicate the status of investigations, resolutions, and next steps or blockers.

  • Drive performance issues to resolution through partnership with other teams and vendors.

  • Contribute to requirement documents for Hardware (HW) vendors and Software (SW) partner teams.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of technical experience in system performance engineering/optimization.

  • 4+ years of experience working with C/C++.

Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Deep familiarity

  • with performance monitoring tools and analysis methods (e.g. V-Tune, Linux perf);

  • AND with fundamentals of computer architecture, including page translation, caching, IO devices, DRAM;

  • AND of basic operating system principles, compilers, program execution and how software uses hardware resources;

  • AND with industry standard benchmarks (e.g. SPEC, TPC) and microbenchmark construction.

  • Experience

  • with both x86 and Arm Instruction Set Architectures;

  • AND system performance engineering/optimization;

  • AND programming in multiple languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, and Python.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
