Microsoft Corporation Senior Electrical Distribution Engineer - Datacenter Engineering in Redmond, Washington

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud.  Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services. 

The Senior Electrical Distribution Engineer - Datacenter Engineering provides key input to other organizations and stakeholders. The successful candidate will be an Electrical Engineer with experience and detailed understanding of medium-voltage (MV) distribution globally, have a Power System background and understand the design and fundamentals of the substations, electrical distribution, and relaying & protection.

Responsibilities

The Senior Electrical Distribution Engineer - Datacenter Engineering will be responsible for the oversight of specification and drawing development detailing campus level medium-voltage distribution systems from the substation to the datacenter, including the single-line diagrams, sequence of operation for the electrical controls systems, overall distribution architecture and protections required. This candidate will be responsible for working with our consultants making sure they engineer and design to Microsoft technical standards. Collaborate with Global electrical team to understand and develop the data center (DC) designs for medium-voltage distribution and protection schemes from Basis of Design (BoD) to Issue for Constructions (IFC) for new DC project buildouts.

  • Lead and direct Engineering consultants in the design and coordination of the medium-voltage distribution systems with other disciplines, associated controls and overall electrical distribution and topology for campus power systems.

  • Serve as first point of contact for all escalations on power distribution design questions.

  • Have the ability to design power distribution schematics, protection and automation schemes, Basis of Designs, etc for the integration of alternative energy sources with a campus power distribution system.

  • Interface closely with internal procurement team, manufacturers and the global and local engineering teams to deliver the medium-voltage solutions needed for projects.

  • Ensure the flow of technical questions from other teams is prioritized and questions are answered in a timely manner.

  • Assist the Operations teams with medium-voltagesystem and equipment strategic improvements, working closely with equipment vendors and suppliers. 

  • The position will require some travel to sites for “Factory Witness Testing”, equipment and engineering vendor interaction in the design process, as well as final commissioning of the installed systems.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience

  • 3+ years of experience working with relays, protection schemes, medium-voltage distribution system, power and distribution transformers, earthing and switching

  • 3+ years of experience in preparing detailed medium-voltage specifications, single-line diagrams, and detail design documents.

  • 3+ years of experience with power system analysis and engineering software packages with knowledge of building codes and regulations.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings:

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering License or the ability to get a Professional Engineering License within 2 years.

  • 4+ years’ experience with datacenter or mission critical medium-voltage distribution systems, including preparing detailed specifications and design documents.

  • History and track record of working on large (>250MVA) substation and medium-voltage distribution systems.

  • Experience managing both internal and external vendors, with a proven ability to manage and monitor progress to ensure objectives are achieved for outsourced project efforts.

  • Experience with power system analysis and engineering software packages.

Electrical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
