Brown University Research Assistant in Providence, Rhode Island

Job Description:

The primary purpose of this position is to support the lab in making progress toward its research goals. The Research Assistant will assist with conducting experiments in the field of RNA biology, specifically the role of RNA binding proteins and RNA modifications in heart and skeletal muscle diseases. The Research Assistant will assist the PI in experiments involving general molecular biology procedures, cell culture, and preform basic laboratory management. The Research Assistant will also assist with mouse colony management.

The Research Assistant will work closely with other staff (postdocs, graduate students, undergraduate students) to perform experiments.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date one year after the date of hire, which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience (Grade 7)

  • Required: Bachelor degree in biology, biochemistry, genetics or related field.

  • Undergraduate research experience with previous experience working in a laboratory setting.

  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Relevant coursework and basic knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of Molecular, Cell Biology and Biochemistry.

  • Experience working with mouse colonies preferred but not necessary.

  • Strong computer skills with preferably some experience using laboratory data programs.

  • Previous experience working with scientific data bases is preferred but not necessary.

  • Undergraduate research experience with previous experience working in a laboratory setting.

  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Competencies

  • Teamwork: Must be willing and able to provide technical support to laboratory personnel.

  • Organizational: Must see to maintenance and organization of laboratory research activities.

  • Interpersonal: Must interact well with other laboratory personnel, with members of the University community, and with outside vendors.

  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community

    Criminal and education background check required.
