Job Summary:

  • The Director is responsible for managing a team whose main function is the timely and accurate external financial reporting for NRG Energy, Inc.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead external GAAP financial reporting and filing processes for quarterly, annual and certain periodic reports, including drafting of financial statements, footnotes, MD&A and completion of GAAP checklists

  • Lead the implementation of new and existing accounting literature to ensure compliance with GAAP accounting standards as well as SEC regulations, including preparation of documentation for appropriate accounting and disclosure of complex business transactions and events

  • Responsible for coordinating with FP&A and Investor Relations to ensure consistency of information disclosed in earnings decks, press releases etc.

  • Support various aspects of the external audit, including managing audit requests to ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements

  • Manage direct reports, coaching and mentoring, identifying professional development needs and training opportunities, and performance evaluations

  • Work with all stakeholders to review the reporting impacts of complex financial transactions

  • Document internal control procedures and assist internal audit with periodic testing to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Act and controls pertaining to financial reporting process

  • Review of stand-alone financial statements as prepared by the business accounting teams

  • Special projects involving financial deliverables and ad hoc reporting, as needed

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid worker, 3 days in office

  • Overtime required during quarterly and annual close processes, and as special projects arise

  • Travel may be required

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least ten years of experience demonstrating a working knowledge of accounting and reporting principles

  • Prior experience leading teams responsible for SEC reporting

  • Bachelors’ degree in accounting

  • Strong understanding of US GAAP and SEC reporting rules and regulations

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel, and computer savvy with respect to general ledger and reporting software

  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Public accounting experience and CPA required

  • Prior experience working with SAP, HFM or other consolidation systems, and Wdesk

  • Six years SEC reporting experience
