CITY OF PORTALES School/Community Resource Officer-Portales in Portales, New Mexico

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: We are looking for a dedicated school resource officer to provide security and develop safety plans for our school. The school resource officer's responsibilities include developing the best safety procedures for potential threats in the school, conducting drills with students and staff, breaking up fights, and de-escalating aggression between students and between students and teachers. The school resource officer is the main security resource of the school and is a certified police officer.

To be successful as a school resource officer, you should have patience and an even temper, and the ability to mediate fights and arguments. You should be a moral and ethical role model for students.

Reporting to the Investigative Sergeant or other senior officer, this employee performs general work, enforcing state and local laws and statutes, involving the Portales Municipal School District, traffic regulation and enforcement, accident, and crime scene investigation. An element of personal danger is involved and officers must be able to respond and react properly in varied emergency and stressful situations, exercising independent judgment in performance of duties. Other duties include writing reports, processing evidence, computer data entry, and use of related equipment. During the school year shifts would be in conjunction with the school districts days and times and may require working of afterschool activities when called upon.

When the school district is not in regular session the officer will be responsible for working with the district on their summer programs as well as coordinating other community events. This position requires a willingness to work irregular hours, evening or night shifts, weekends, and holidays as necessary to assure protection for the public.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Breaking up fights and arguments and assisting all parties to talk through their differences. 2. Detaining or arresting students who are breaking the law in regards to drugs, bringing weapons to school, or making threats to the school. 3. Remanding students who commit lesser offenses to the principal or vice-principal. 4. Conducting physical searches of students' property, pursuant to school and legal standards, if they are suspected of breaking the law and ensuring the school administrators' safety during these searches. 5. Patrolling the school grounds, ensuring overall safety, viewing videos and security monitors, and watching for strangers or suspicious activity. 6. Supervising metal detectors and special events and directing foot and auto traffic if necessary. 7. Giving assembly presentations on school safety, drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, and online safety. 8. Protecting the school and students against theft and property damage, and assisting in medical emergencies. 9. Maintaining positive relationships and contact with students to prevent juvenile delinquency. 10. Working with guidance counselors and support staff to assist students when referrals to service agencies are necessary, or to assist in conflict resolutions. 11. Respond to calls from the dispatcher and react in a calm, professional manner. 12. Investigate/search accident and crime scenes, assembling evidence. 13. Complete routine and special reports on accident, crimes, and other incidents. 14. Act as First Responder to fire and emergency calls, being prepared to administer first aid if necessary. 15. Prepare and serve arrest and search warrants. 16. Work as traffic control at scenes as necessary. 17. Testify in court as needed. 18. Apprehend criminals and offenders, processing prisoners. 19. Locate and uestion witnesses.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS: 1. High school graduate or equivalent. 2. Previous experience/knowledge desired. 3. Ability to follow through on work assignments and perform in stressful situations. 4. Ability to act promptly, taking effective action. 5. Good verbal and written communications skills - ability to speak clearly and distinctly. 6. Must be at least 20 years of age. 7. Must be a U.S. citizen. 8. Vision must be correctable to 20/20. 9. Must have a valid New Mexico drivers license. 10. Must have valid Police Officer certification by the NM Law Enforcement Academy. 11. Job requires continued maintenance of firearm qualifications standards. 12. Possession of a good reputation and background, which will withstand pre-appointment investigation including no felony convictions and no misdemeanor convictions within the past 3 years. 13. Must possess an Intermediate Police Officers Certification from the New Mexico Department of Public Safety. 14. Eligible for waiver for certification through the state of New Mexico.

COMMENTS ON PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The majority of the time, police work involves patrolling an assigned area for the purposes of preventing and discovering crimes which does not require heavy physical activity. However, the Police Officer needs to be able to respond actively to any situation in which the public or the officer may be in danger. Physical fitness needs to be maintained as well as mental alertness. Persons selected for employment must also successfully complete a physical exam with vision correctable to 20/20, psychological examination and drug screening.

WORK SCHEDULE: The regular work week is 8 - 10 straight hours a day for 4 or 5 days a week - shift work, some weekends and holidays. Schedule will have to be established at a later date.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Travel for meetings and training may be required. 2. Overnight travel may be required.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must pass a background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records and other records deemed necessary. 2. Must pass a post-offer pre-employment drug screen administered by a City-designated facility.

CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT: 1. Candidates must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the Citys insurance carrier. 2.
