A Brief Overview The Laboratory Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) will assist the laboratory genetic counselors in administrative tasks such as maintaining databases, scheduling meetings, tracking projects, and reviewing patient information. Additionally, the GCA will provide customer service on behalf of the laboratory by answering phone calls, responding to questions appropriately, and following up on client questions. The GCA will check in and accession samples received for testing, triaging issues related to order clarification and/or patient identification as they are identified. The GCA will help to review patient records and provide a summary of patient demographic and medical history information and follow-up with the patient/client for additional information if necessary. Must be able to meet deadlines, work on several projects at once, and understand all the concepts involved in the work performed. May require some independent judgment.

Job Responsibilities The CHOP Genomic Diagnostic Lab is seeking a laboratory-based genetic counseling assistant to join the lab genetic counseling team. The candidate will be joining a team of 9 laboratory genetic counselors and 3 genetic counseling assistants within a clinical genomics laboratory of approximately 70 genetics professionals. Primary responsibilities include providing front-line customer service and supporting sample receipt and accessioning.

The position is full time, day shift, M-F, fully onsite in Philadelphia.

Under the direction of the Genetic Counselors in the Division of Genomic Diagnostics, the Genetic Counseling Assistant's responsibilities may include: Assist genetic counselors with administrative tasks. Help to maintain databases of clinical patients or research study participants. Review medical records and provide patient summaries for genetic counselors. Assist with scheduling of laboratory meetings, and update meeting minutes and agendas. Assist with sample tracking and work to identify workflow issues as they arise. Answer telephones, route and screen callers, take messages and provide routine information to caller promptly and courteously. Retrieve messages from voicemail and email and respond or route messages appropriately. Coordinate paperwork for clients, collaborators, and patients. Check in and appropriately store samples received for testing. Accession samples in the laboratory information system received for testing. Triage issues related to test appropriateness, sample identification, test order clarification, and/or billing clarification. Provide customer service coverage hours as assigned. Assist with production of patient and clinician educational and marketing materials.

Education Qualifications High School Diploma / GED Required Bachelor's Degree medical / scientific field Preferred Master's Degree Enrolled In - Genetic Counse ing Preferred
