Summary This position is located in Washington Headquarters Services, Facilities Services Directorate, Pentagon Building Management Office (PBMO). This position involves the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment in Federal industrial, institutional, and office buildings in the National Capital Region. Incumbents typical work assignments may include the following: Installs, maintains, modifies, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs secondary power distribution and building electrical systems and related circuits and equipment. Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Performs system inspections, maintenance tests and adjustments, troubleshoots any discovered system deficiency or equipment malfunction, determines and orders all required parts and performs all necessary repairs and corrective actions. You may qualify at the WG-10 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: You must demonstrate a full range of ability in performing common Electrician tasks such as installing wiring, conduit, fixtures, lighting ballast, transformers and other electrical devices to insure proper and safe operation of electrical systems under normal supervision and performing independently in some cases. You may qualify at the WG-08 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: You must demonstrate a full range of some common Electrician tasks such as assisting in performing electrical maintenance, repairing, and troubleshooting electrical systems under close supervision of a work leader or supervisor. You may qualify at the WG-05 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: You must demonstrate a full range of routine Electrician Helper tasks including general housekeeping duties in shop and on the job sites, keeping parts and tool storage cabinets properly arranged and maintaining current inventories, and delivering parts and supplies to the higher graded mechanics. More difficult tasks are performed under very close supervision. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements: Trouble shooting (electrical) Ability to Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work) Knowledge of Electrical Equipment PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb stairs up to 5 stories and must be able to walk considerable distances on a regular basis. The incumbent may also work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and be required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolds and platforms where equipment may be in hard-to-reach places. May be required to lift equipment and tools up to 40 lbs. in weight and occasionally over that amount. Must be capable of passing a physical exam to wear a respirator for periods of several hours at a time. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is generally performed inside buildings, shops and office areas that are well lighted, heated and ventilated. Occasionally there is exposure to shocks and burns from live wires. May be required to work in dirty, dusty, and greasy environments. Injury to eyes may result from falling dust, dirt, or chips of plaster caused by drilling holes for fastening electrical equipment. There is danger of cuts, bruises, eye and hand injuries due to the use of powered tools. As work requires, may also work outside building in cold, damp, or hot weather and in tunnels, manholes or other underground areas. May also be required to work in areas where ventilating, heating, or cooling equipment has been shut down for maintenance or other purposes. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
