Job Summary

The ideal candidate will have a passion for elevating guest experiences both indoors and out, thrive on creating memorable recreation events, and use their creativity to develop and implement programming initiatives. This is both a strategic and hands-on role which requires autonomy and initiative. This position reports to the Director of Spa and Wellness. Prior hotel experience in an environment that includes guest activities and program creation is required.

Essential Functions

The Recreation Manager manages all related operations to achieve the highest standards of guest satisfaction and financial profitability. The areas of responsibility include children's programming (Paintbox), guided outdoor pursuits through the Compass Sports outlet, recreation equipment rentals, pool operations and various other indoor and outdoor experiences.

  • Oversee and direct the development, communication, and facilitation of all activities, programs, and events for Recreation operations to include:

  • Compass Sports

  • Paintbox (kids program)

  • Pool & cabana operations

  • Bicycle & equipment rentals

  • Fishing programs

  • Tennis center

  • Recreation amenities and rentals (revenue-generating and complimentary)

  • Liaison between internal department experiences such as Farm, Cooking School and F&B outlets.

  • Serves as property liaison for any third-party recreation vendors.

  • Serves as property liaison for group experience programming.

  • Manages third party partnerships to ensure guest access to Golf, Shooting, Equestrian, Nordic programs and more.

  • Develops and facilitates seasonal and holiday recreation programming

  • Manages a team of up to ten associates with backgrounds in childcare, outdoor pursuits, activities programming and pool operations.

  • Manages all day-to-day operations. Understands employee positions well enough to perform duties in employees' absence.

  • Monitors quality and standards, meets and exceeds the expectations of guests.

  • Develops, maintains, and ensures adherence to all departmental SOPs.

  • Provides exceptional service per Forbes Four Star and Pendry standards.

  • Leads supervisors, recreation staff, interns and seasonal associates

  • Demonstrates knowledge of job-relevant issues, products, systems, and processes.

  • Utilizes interpersonal and communication skills to lead, influence, and encourage others; advocates sound financial/business decision-making; demonstrates honesty/integrity; leads by example.

  • Skilled financial operator with the ability to implement strategies to drive revenue and flex expense controls appropriately.

  • Schedules events, programs, and activities, as well as the work of others.

  • Manages direct-booking website for experiences in partnership with the PR & Marketing team, ensuring programming content is current, accurate and planning is ahead of the upcoming season.

  • Provides personal assistance, medical attention, emotional support, or other personal care to others such as coworkers and guests.

  • Develops specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.

  • Manages various outside recreation vendors.

  • Orders and manages necessary supplies. Ensures workers have supplies, equipment, tools, and uniforms necessary to do their jobs.

  • Assists in the planning and execution of group recreation activities both on and off-property.

  • Works closely with group meeting planners, and the sales department to outline customized programming options.

  • Serves as a role model to demonstrate appropriate behaviors and company values.

  • Improves service by communicating and assisting individuals to understand guest needs, providing guidance, feedback, and individual coaching when needed.

  • Oversees all Human Resources activities in the Recreation Department.

  • Oversees associate satisfaction and guest satisfaction results, and ensures corrective action is taken when needed.

  • Identifies the developmental needs of others and coaches, mentors, or otherwise helps others to improve their knowledge or skills.

  • Participates in the performance appraisal process, giving feedback when needed.

  • Coordinates all training for associates in the recreation and pool department.

  • Encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members.

  • Communicates expectations and performance objectives to subordinates; subordinates are also open to raise questions and/or concerns.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that will likely include evenings, weekends, and holidays

    Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a recreation management role, preferably within a hospitality setting

  • Effective influence skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Ability to acquire and maintain relationships e.g., associates, guests, members, vendors.

  • Strong organization skills

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Effective conflict management skills

  • Good training/facilitator skills

  • Knowledge of emergency plans, safety and security guidelines and OSHA standards

  • Financial management skills e.g., ability to analyze P&L statements, develop operating budgets, forecasting and capital expenditure planning

  • Knowledge of overall hotel/resort operations

  • Ability to use standard software applications and hotel systems

  • Good presentation and platform skills in front of large groups of people

  • Strong communication skills (verbal, listening, writing)

  • Strong consensus building skills

  • Strong customer and associate relation skills

  • First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain upon onboarding

  • Must be able to repetitively lift, push, pull & carry up to 15 lbs., frequently up to 25 lbs and occasionally up to 75 lbs

  • Must be able to walk, climb into and out of and operate a vehicle frequently, with occasional stair climbing

  • Must be able to twist, bend and squat frequently; kneel or crawl occasionally; infrequently climb a ladder

  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions (rain, wind, snow, heat)

  • Must be able to perform repetitive hand & arm movements, pushing and pulling and simple grasping frequently; squeezing, overhead reaching & fine manipulation occasionally.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work tasks are performed indoors and outdoors. Position requires walking and giving direction most of the working day. Must be able to exert well-paced ability to maneuver between functions occurring simultaneously. Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Must be able to lift trays of food or food items weighing up to 30 lbs. frequently. Must be able to push and pull carts and equipment weighing up to 250 lbs. occasionally.
