A Brief Overview

The Senior Director of Performance Improvement is responsible for the oversight and direction of strategic performance improvement initiatives across Stanford Medicine Stanford Health Care. This includes but not limited to operational excellence and process improvement (PI) activities to enhance clinical outcomes and elevate the overall performance of the healthcare delivery system. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Quality, Patient Safety & Effectiveness, the Senior Director collaborates with cross-functional leaders and teams within Stanford Health Care and Stanford School of Medicine to develop and implement performance improvement strategies aligned with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.

The key areas of responsibility include development and implementation of the PI strategy, expanding improvement training and capability across the workforce, management of large scale improvement efforts, and oversight of the PI team who are allocated to a wide range of functional areas and service across the health system.

This is an onsite/hybrid job that will require traveling to the various locations to observe workflows in the gemba, understand opportunities across the enterprise (Stanford Health Care-Tri Valley, Stanford Medicine Partners, Stanford Children's Hospital) and develop appropriate plans and relationships.

What you will do

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive performance improvement roadmap to achieve organizational objectives related to quality, safety, and efficiency (for example: Operational plan, high reliability framework, clinical improvement structures).

  • Collaborate with Medical Director)(s), physician dyads, clinical leaders, operational leaders, and frontline staff to identify areas for improvement and implement evidence-based practices to enhance healthcare delivery processes.

  • Partner with clinical departments, quality committees, and multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement performance improvement projects, including clinical pathway optimization, care standardization, and patient safety initiatives.

  • Design and implement performance measurement systems, dashboards, and scorecards to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and track progress towards organizational goals.

  • Analyze data and metrics to identify trends, root causes of performance gaps, and opportunities for improvement, and provide actionable insights to inform decision-making.

  • Prepare and present performance improvement reports, progress updates, and recommendations to executive leadership, board of directors, and regulatory bodies as needed.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with external stakeholders to stay abreast of best practices, emerging trends in healthcare performance improvement.

  • Drive change management initiatives to ensure successful implementation and adoption of performance improvement initiatives, including stakeholder engagement, communication, and change management.

  • Guides the build and spread of a Stanford Ready Continuous Improvement Model that is responsive to the organization’s most critical priorities related to safety and throughput.

  • Facilitate performance improvement workshops, training sessions, and collaborative learning opportunities to build a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

  • Lead and mentor a team of performance improvement professionals, including performance improvement consultants, analysts, and project managers, to drive continuous improvement initiatives. Actively supports consultant use of concepts such as lean, six sigma, DMAIC, PDSA, coaching, data visualization, daily management, rapid cycle testing, and change management, workout strategies, etc.

  • Oversee the equitable distribution of improvement team resources, ensuring teams are integrated, visible, and effectively contribute to the organization's strategic objectives. Balance resource allocation to maximize impact and efficiency.

  • Oversees the design and implementation of a comprehensive SHC training and education program for performance improvement. Coordinate training curriculum with existing programs and maintain alignment between existing programs and new training offerings.

  • Develops and manages the Performance Improvement offices budgets, finances and reporting throughout the entire financial cycle.

Education Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a work-related field/discipline from an accredited college or university. Master's in Public Health, Health Services Administration, Business Administration or equivalent a plus.

Experience Qualifications

  • Ten (10) plus years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience working with senior executive leadership. Health system operations experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of governmental and other regulatory standards, requirements, and guidelines, specifically, Joint Commission, CMS Conditions of Participation, Title 22, California Business & Professions code, California Health and Safety Code

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal and personnel management.

  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirements related to the functional area.

  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area, including Electronic Health Records (EHR). .

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Visio.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage, organize, prioritize and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Ability to provide leadership and influence others.

  • Ability to foster effective working relationships and build consensus.

  • Ability to mediate and resolve complex problems and issues.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Lean Six Sigma Certification required .

  • Scrum Master or Project Management Certification preferred .

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $88.93 - $117.84 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
