Description of Department:

The SUNY Oswego Theatre Department has approximately 60 majors in its Liberal Arts Bachelor of Arts degree program along with the available minors in Dance, Expressive Arts Therapy, Live Event Design, and Theatre. We are a NAST accredited program with strong regional and national presence through the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and United States Institute of Theatrical Technology. We have two performance venues, a 400+ seat proscenium space that is the premiere performance venue on campus and an intimate Blackbox space for student produced works, devised.

The Theatre Department at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full time tenure track Assistant Professor in Theatre History & Criticism, to begin in August 2024

Description of Responsibilities:

The candidate will teach a variety of courses such as: Introduction to Theatre, Theatre History, Text Analysis, Dramaturgy, and in other areas of specialization. A successful candidate will demonstrate strong evidence as a collaborator and show a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. This position will support department productions through the execution or mentorship of student dramaturgy.

In addition, the Assistant Professor of Theatre History & Criticism will be expected to display and maintain a demonstrated excellence in teaching and artistic endeavor/scholarship potential, a commitment to a liberal arts undergraduate education by actively supporting SUNY Oswego's general education curriculum and possess communication and interpersonal skills to effectively work with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

All tenure track faculty are expected to participate in service activities on the department, school, and university level appropriate to rank with the goal of providing leadership. This would include academic advising, curriculum development, and recruitment. Required Qualifications:

  • Completed PhD in Theatre History/Criticism or related area.

  • Commitment to the development of a curriculum that responds effectively to the artistic needs of an ever-changing profession.

  • Successful candidates will have promise of or excellence in artistic, scholarly, and pedagogical practice, have prior experience as a theatre artist in a professional or an academic setting, and have a commitment to mentoring students from diverse backgrounds, identities, and levels of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of a commitment to collegial collaboration.

  • Experience with new-play development and/or devised works.

  • A strong, documented commitment to furthering the Diversity, Accessibility, Equity, and Inclusion Mission of the department by centering the lives and experiences of BIPOC and LQBTQIA+ individuals in teaching, scholarship/research, and creative practice.

  • A scholar-artist in Theatre who specializes in traditionally underrepresented areas, especially performance, histories, and dramatic literatures of the Global Majority, possibly including Chicano, Hispanic, African Diaspora, Asian/Asian American, and Indigenous peoples and/or other artistic practices and traditions outside of the Western canon.

  • Active participation in industry organizations such as, but not limited to: LMDA or ATHE
