Job Description
NASA Ames Simulation Laboratories (SimLabs) at NASA Ames Research Center consists of the Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS), with a 60 ft. vertical motion system and interchangeable cabs, which can be customized to simulate any aerospace vehicle; the Crew Vehicle Systems Research facility (CVSRF), which houses the B747-400 flight simulator; and Future Flight Central (FFC), an Air Traffic Control/Air Traffic Management (ATC/ATM) simulation facility dedicated to solving present and emerging capacity problems of the nation's airports. SimLabs’ mission is to provide up to date reliable simulation facilities that our customers can use to perform research and experimentation in aviation related disciplines. The Flight Simulator Technician position performs critical electronics installation, testing, and maintenance on these highly specialized and one-of-a-kind research simulators, enabling SimLabs to remain a world-class facility performing leading edge aerospace experiments.
Position Requirements
Monitor, test, analyze, maintain and operate SimLabs equipment, including motion-based flight simulators, Air Traffic Control (ATC) simulation laboratories, audio and video equipment, and various simulation hardware systems;
Install, configure and maintain the following equipment: Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) systems including image generation systems, host computers, graphic engines, cockpit displays including Head Down Display (HDD) monitors and Out-The-Window (OTW) projectors, pilot control loading systems and I/O interface units
Participate in the development of unique systems and configurations to satisfy customer experimentation needs.
Diagnose and correct routine problems with simulators and systems
Assist in diagnosing and correcting complex simulation problems
Perform regular preventive maintenance tasks and required periodic testing
Assist with simulator and component refurbishment and hardware modifications
Ensure current SimLabs equipment is compatible with required research configurations
Ensure operability, efficiency, and compliance with existing NASA and other standards
Provide ongoing technical support to customers, ensuring proper functional use of equipment and programs and precluding undue interruptions to SimLab services
Conduct feasibility studies to identify and analyze SimLabs system failures and analyze data to determine if trends exist which forecast the need for future replacement or modification of SimLabs hardware
Perform logistics duties, including parts received, repair, and testing/validation
Perform housekeeping functions to maintain the simulators
Perform administrative tasks as required
Qualify and perform duties as a simulation operator
Complete all required training activities on schedule
Required Education/Skills
2-year technical degree in Electronics or equivalent related training
2 years direct simulator experience or related experience in electronics/avionics (AMT, automated systems, or computer networking repair and troubleshooting)
Additional Desired Skills
Ability to interpret and apply system prints and schematics
Ability to utilize technical manuals.
Proficiency in operating test equipment (oscilloscope, multi-meter, signal generator, logic analyzer, etc.).
Proficiency in soldering and circuit board repairs
Knowledge in analog and digital theory
Working knowledge of Windows, Linux, networks and network protocols
