IHS Markit Principal Database Engineer (SQL Server) in London, United Kingdom
The Data Platform Engineering team are responsible for designing, validating, automating and enhancing the data platforms used within IHS Markit. These platforms deliver data, our primary commodity, to world leading institutions in the finance, telecommunications, energy, defence, transportation, and automotive industries. Our customer base represents 85% of the Fortune Global 500.
This core engineering position is a rare opportunity to take a lead role in driving the evolution of the SQL Server platform for an S&P 500 company. In collaboration with developers, DBAs, system administrators and IT engineers, the successful candidate will help IHS Markit effectively ingest, store, process, and deliver its most valuable commodity, data.

IHS Markit invests significantly in current technology and this role will involve designing for and working with modern converged IT infrastructure and up-to-date versions of both database and operating system technologies.
Primarily a SQL Server based role, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of all supported data platforms. IHS Markit is also investigating Open Source DBMSs such as MySQL, and Big Data technologies including HDFS, Hadoop, HBase, Spark, Ignite, Elasticsearch, Kafka, and more to handle new data sets and drive value through analytics.
Engineers are expected to stay abreast of general industry trends, and how they can bring value to IHS Markit’s customers.
Duties & accountabilities
Delivering services more quickly and to a higher quality using approaches such as
Infrastructure as code
Core technology roadmap delivery & maintenance
Design & documentation of core technology standards & policies
Design of shared and dedicated database platforms
Delivery of core technology build instructions & training
Integrating databases and data platforms with supporting technologies – monitoring, management, security, compliance
Delivery of standard operating procedures for core technologies – backup, recovery, patch, upgrade, clone, HA, DR, capacity management
Generating new, and sharing old, ideas
Sharing knowledge and experience to audiences with different levels of technical understanding
Requirements gathering – we build what the business needs
Proposing, or reviewing, new feature/technology adoption
Testing new versions of databases and data platforms (functional & performance)
Testing existing database and data platform technologies on new software versions (E.g. Windows Server, firmware) and hardware platforms (E.g. server, storage)
Complex incident and problem resolution (tier 3 support), including application and infrastructure performance problem investigations
Influencing adoption of new technologies through budget submission and justification
Improving software licence utilisation & management

More emphasis will be placed on a candidate’s ability to evidence their soft and technical skills than on their academic background.
The ideal candidate will have worked as a senior SQL Server DBA or SQL Server engineer for 10+ years, in environments that have constantly challenged them, enabling them to develop very strong interpersonal and technical capabilities.
Achievement of Microsoft Certified Master (MCM), Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE), or evidence that the candidate has achieved an equivalent level of technical capability, is expected.
Active membership of the SQL Server user community (SQL Saturday, SQL Bits, PASS) is a bonus.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding, and hands-on experience, with all aspects of the following processes and technologies:
SQL Server installation, start-up, backup, recovery, patch, upgrade, migration, & disaster recovery
SQL Server resource management, including underlying infrastructure (server, storage, network)
SQL Server capacity forecasting (organic growth, new initiatives, application changes, infrastructure changes)
SQL Server replication, including Transactional Replication for deployments exceeding 30TBs and 20K+ Articles
SQL Server Failover Clustering, Always On Availability Groups, Failover Cluster Instances, including configuration on ESXi and multi-site
Database Mirroring, including across domains
Windows Server 2008 – 2016
SQL Server licensing (2008 onwards), including an understanding of how this is influenced by Software Agreements & Software Assurance
Applying an understanding of the SQL Server Query Optimizer and database design best practices (partitioning, indexing, etc) to help developers write efficient and well performing applications
Leveraging SQL Server performance features (e.g. Dynamic Management Views) to reduce response times or increase throughput for key business processes, both proactively and reactively
Developing efficient SQL, Transact-SQL, and Powershell to automate administration tasks
Securing Windows/SQL Server including through the use of Active Directory, Group Managed Service Accounts, Kerberos, security delegation, penetration testing, and implementation of, and adherence to, security best practices
SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) – Scale-out farm design & management, report design
SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) – design, implementation, and usage
SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
Job execution via SQL Server Agent
SSRS & SSAS report design
Storage integration – IO management, multipath, storage protocols
SQL Server deployment on both physical and virtual machines

Candidates must be able to estimate the costs related to delivering technology services, including software licencing, hardware purchasing and maintenance, human effort costs and the cost of delay. This understanding will be vital in designing services that meet the needs of the business, while remaining cost effective.
No management experience is required, but ‘thought leadership’ qualities will help a candidate achieve success in this role.
Experience is important, but there will be at least an equal focus on attitude and aptitude.
