Machinist III

We are seeking a skilled machinist with a strong background in operating both manual and CNC-operated machining equipment.  This includes experience with light to heavy lathes, mills, shapers, and similar equipment.  The ideal candidate will possess the ability to machine both new and repaired parts to a high level of craftsmanship, holding tolerances of +/-.001 or better when required.  At this level, machinists serve as technical resources for less experienced colleagues.  This is not a production machine tool operator.  This person will be able to read both hand sketches & finish drawings to gather necessary information needed for set-up & machining. 

 

Essential Duties

 

  • Operate a variety of manual and CNC machining equipment (lathes, mills, shapers, etc.)
  • Read and interpret technical drawings (blueprints, sketches) to understand part specifications
  • Set up machines for specific jobs, ensuring proper tooling and workholding
  • Machines pieces in accordance with work orders, blueprints, specifications, drawings, reference planes, location of surfaces, geometric dimensioning tolerancing (GDT), and machining parameters
  • Calculates dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and gauges
  • Measure and inspect machined parts for quality control, identifying and discarding defects
  • Perform basic maintenance on assigned machines
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area

     

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Plan the machining process for assigned jobs, including selecting the appropriate machines, tools, and cutting parameters
  • Program CNC machines to automate specific machining operations
  • Creates, properly executes, and archives G-code programs
  • Troubleshoot and solve machining problems to ensure efficient production
  • Maintain accurate records of production, including part numbers, quantities, and inspection results
  • May be involved in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize machining processes
  • Work collaboratively with other machinists, engineers, and production personnel

     

Skills and Qualifications

 

  • Two year degree in related field or high school diploma with a minimum of 5 years work experience.
  • Proficiency with measuring tools, micrometers etc.
  • Knowledge of blueprint terminology and the ability to read and interpret prints for manufacturing requirements
  • Highly motivated & able to use proper feeds & speeds for maximum efficiency.
  • CNC programing, CAD/CAM Software (Mastercam)
  • Ability to arc weld.
  • Strong background in safety & rigging.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Must be self-motivated with the ability to think critically.
  • Good communication skills.
  • This position may require the candidate to learn additional responsibilities.

     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license with good driving record.
  • Ability to set-up & operate portable machining equipment.
  • Experience with stamping & forging equipment.
  • Concept of operation in Electrical & Hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to weld & braze.
  • Strong Mechanical Background.
