The Dimensional Designer Senior will develop tools, techniques, and systems that support the design and delivery process at Walt Disney Imagineering! An experienced model builder who is familiar with various types of models making such as physical dimensional models, architectural, miniatures, and digital 3D models as well as full-size mock-ups/prototypes. Must possess a good sense of design and have the ability to visualize and translate from two-dimensional information to three-dimensional product. May lead others and develop a strong work with related teams (Architecture, Production Design, Show Set Design, Special Effects, etc.).

This is a Project Hire position without any guarantee of permanent placement.

What You Will Do

  • Work with project teams and various disciplines to establish goals and understand project requirements and providing informal leadership.

  • During production/installation, provides informal leadership to external vendors for rockwork, character facade and/or character paint.

  • Provides leadership specific to scope of work.

  • Work on several jobs at once and prioritize workload.

  • Lead a team to produce models according to budget, schedule and within parameters given by the project.

  • Lead projects to include Land, R&DE, and Disney Cruise Line level of efforts.

  • Produce and track accurate schedules and budgets.

  • Take direction from Art Directors, Show Producers, Production Designers and lead team accordingly.

  • Collaborate with various teams and work in collaboration with other team members in developing ideas.

  • Design, develop and produce high caliber models both physical and digital using innovative equipment and techniques that show artistic intent and integrate multiple teams.

  • Participate in brainstorming sessions for new ride/attraction ideas.

  • May be assigned to multiple projects including “Blue Sky” design studio, scenic illusions, and various capital authorized projects.

  • Determine type of model and strategy to produce model working from a drawing package.

  • Coordinate projects for single small to moderate size venues.

  • Determine and direct mock-up and staging efforts.

  • Oversee design and production progress to schedule and budget and advise on impact of all proposed changes.

  • Research new/existing materials relative to company standards and applicability to project goals.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of practical applied experience in model building, or related experience in entertainment industry.

  • Must have experience leading projects to include responsibility for estimates, budgets and schedules, prioritizing work and carrying job through.

  • Knowledge of building construction methods and variety of materials.

  • Must have architectural and/or digital model building experience.

  • Have a good sense of design and the ability to visualize and produce models in 3-D.

  • Understand and be able to translate drawing packages.

  • Carpentry and fabrication skills, versatile in a variety of methods of fabrication and production and solid understanding of hand and power tools.

  • Construction, fabrication, sculpting, painting, drawing skills.

  • Ability to be adaptable, versatile and work well under pressure.

  • Domestic and International travel required.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Knowledge of plaster carving techniques/ rockwork helpful.

  • Knowledge of themed painting techniques and materials helpful.

  • Theme Park experience a plus.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in theater, fine arts or environmental design preferred, not required.
