ODOT is recruiting for a structural designer to join our Bridge Design Sub-Unit in La Grande! In this role, you will perform the design of simple to moderately complex bridges and other highway and transportation related structures to solve engineering problems. This person in this position provides structural analysis and design services to project delivery for the state's bridges and transportation structures. The structural designer collaborates with teams by providing technical guidance to regional bridge design teams and region personnel. Apply today!

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform bridge and structures engineering of simple to moderately complex bridges and other transportation related structures.

  • Perform modeling for structural analysis.

  • Perform design and detailing for simple to moderately complex bridges and structures.

  • Prepare estimates of probable construction cost.

  • Prepare construction specifications.

  • Coordinate the resolution of design and detail issues through the project team.

  • Complete preliminary design and final design phase.

  • Perform a complete engineering analysis and load rating of new bridges.

  • Complete design and structure cost data and calculation books.

  • Perform quality practices and quality checking duties.

  • Provide engineering support to construction project managers.

  • Assist structural design engineers in consultation for planning, scoping, technical design, and construction issues.

  • Assist the structural design engineers in providing project scoping consultation to project leaders.

  • Assist Structural Design Engineers in providing emergency response support.

Qualifications, Required & Requested Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of and passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam AND one year of experience applying professional engineering theory, principles and methods.

Special Qualifications:

Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).

  • Experience applying professional engineering theory, principles and methods in civil or structural design.

  • Formal education in civil engineering with a structural emphasis.

  • Experience designing non-bridge highway and transportation-related structures (e.g., retaining walls, culverts, overhead sign supports).

  • Experience designing simple to moderately complex bridges.

Working Conditions:

  • The majority of work is performed in an office environment with occasional field work required.

  • Field work may require walking adjacent to fast moving traffic, stooping, bending or climbing around hazardous locations, working 20 feet or more above ground, traffic, railways or water, and using safety equipment.

  • Occasional day shift or night shift work required outside of normal work schedule.
