Great Lakes Cheese 2nd Shift Slurry Operator (Sun-Thurs) in La Crosse, Wisconsin

Job Overview

The Slurry Operator is responsible for maintaining the proper blend of ingredients. The Sunday through Thursday Slurry Operator gets ingredients ready prior to start-up on Sunday afternoons to prepare ingredient inventory for the production week.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate forklift to move pallets of ingredients.

  • Set up powders for groups, open and dump bags of powder and other ingredients.

  • Properly follow production schedule for order of groups.

  • Read the blend sheets and follows instructions that may be given on the blend sheets to Grinder and standardize blender.

  • Properly scan cheese and ingredients to in process or blend sheet.

  • Record correct batch numbers on blend sheet if ingredients are not scanned to blend sheet.

  • Use hand held or the inventory report to look up the oldest ingredient batches and use in proper rotation-first in first out.

  • Label any unused ingredient with its description and or batch (if needed) and return to proper storage- (cooler or dry ingredient) when done with ingredient.

  • Collect blender samples for Lab/Quality Assurance analysis.

  • Keep work area neat and dispose of empty powder bags, cardboard, plastic and any work debris.

  • Clean up powder spills by blenders and powder room--keep floors swept in the slurry area.

  • Verify group sheets for accuracy of cheese scanned to group to assure an accurate inventory.

  • Ensure that all necessary ingredients are ready and on hand for use.

  • Assist with the training of new employees when requested by Supervisor.

  • Complete all paperwork completely and correctly.

  • Ensure quality of ingredients.

  • Take pre-shift inventory of powders in the powder warehouse.

  • Safely operate machinery in close quarters.

  • Operate powder-handling system.

  • Dispense appropriate amounts of water and fat from dispensing system.

  • All GLC employees are expected to perform any assignment or job task according to the stated safety policies and procedures.

  • All GLC employees are expected to produce our products in a manner that exceeds the quality and value expectation of our customers and consumers by adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices, Policies and Procedures outlined in our Safe Quality Food Program.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

• Ability to operate hand held computer, personal computer and computer screen control panels.

• Ability to work with minimal supervision.

• Ability to analyze and solve problems.

• Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers and management.

• Good Mathematical skills.

• Good communication skills: verbal and written.

• Ability to use hand held scanners

• Basic computer & SAP skills.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED.

  • Ability to operate powder control systems.

  • Ability to operate various Powdered Industrial Trucks.

Working Conditions

• Ability to constantly stand/walk; bend/flex/extend neck; frequently grip/reach/lift/pull with L/R hands.

• Ability to frequently handle material from floor-to-waist, waist-to-shoulder and pushing/pulling/carrying.

• Hair nets, ear plugs/muffs, hardhats, and/or safety glasses may be required.

• Product weight: up to 100 lbs

• Repetitive work in a fast-paced production environment with average temperature of 50-60 degrees F.

• Use of motor skills to safely drive tow motors or other motorized vehicles in tight quarters.
