Indian Health Service Medical Support Assistant (Patient Registration) in Kyle, South Dakota

Summary This position is located at the Kyle Health Center in Kyle, SD. The purpose of this position is to provide registration and eligibility services to patients to obtain and process demographic/insurance information for alternate resources, contract health services, and private/commercial insurance. The incumbent will report to the Business Office Manager or designee. Responsibilities Interview patients to obtain pertinent patient registration information. Assist patients in completing new/updated patient registration forms. Determine patient health care eligibility. Maintain, enter, update and verify patient registration data for accurate billing. Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities. Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-04: One (1) year of general experience or Two (2) years of education above high school GS-05: Four (4) years of education above high school or One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level NOTE: Equivalent combination of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable. General Experience Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Specialized Experience Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of specialized experience at the GS-05 grade level Greet patients; Interview patients to obtain demographic and third-party insurance information; Obtain signatures for file on required forms for billing purposes and/or contract health eligibility; Maintain logs on referrals and reports; Scan forms into a patient registration database system. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-06 grade level Assist patients in completing new and/or updated forms for the patient registration system; Determine patient health care eligibility according to the Indian Health Service guidelines; Identify health benefits that are subject to prior approval for inpatient/outpatient care; Obtain and verify insurance eligibility; Maintain, enter, update, and verify all data necessary for patient registration and for accurate billing in the patient registration system. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Additional Information Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. If an exemption is approved then wearing a face mask and regular testing for COVID-19 will be required. This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval.
