Ed Herrington Inc Lumber Building Material Buyer in Hillsdale, New York

Ed Herrington Lumber is a six-location full-service lumber company looking for a lumber and building materials (LBM) buyer. The LBM buyer ensures that our vendors are providing the best combination of quality, service and price to our stores and customers. The LBM buyer determines the best products to fulfill customer needs and demands; works closely with current and prospective vendors and develops and maintains a strong working relationship with them. This position is accountable for profitability in the product lines that are managed. Effective communication with the sales team and other store locations are essential for the success of this position.

Location: Hillsdale, NY (In-Person Position)

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following: (Other duties may be assigned)

Purchasing:

  • Negotiate with vendors and make recommendations to the Purchasing Manager based on the following negotiated criteria:

  • Volume Rebates

  • Cash Discounts and Payment Terms

  • Growth Incentives

  • Buyback Programs

  • Merchandising and PK training

  • Co-o Advertising Dollars and marketing events

  • Locates products that fit our customers needs and present them to management.

  • Develops and implements programs to increase margin dollars by product line.

  • Forecasts material requirements by analyzing trends and needs to establish stocking levels for each location.

  • Manage product line with focus on Lean continuous improvement processes.

  • Ensures that vendors are providing quality products, competitive pricing and service to our stores and customers.

Product Management:

  • Oversees assigned product groups; plans exit strategy for discontinued items and the vendor returns of slow selling products.

  • Reviews sales, turns, margins and gross profit dollars on products purchased.

Store Support:

  • Ensures that stores are receiving updated information on products including the availability, vendor information and POS information.

  • Communicates product updates and changes with the locations.

  • Works closely with the merchandising manager and the marketing department to initiate specials and promotions.

  • Assists stores with product issues including shipments, quality, and defective materials by communication with the store and vendor.

Education/Experience

Required: Minimum of three (3) years’ previous experience in the building materials industry. Experience in vendor negotiations, analysis and forecasting. Understanding of the buying cycles associated with the building materials industry. College education in applicable field of study a plus.

Language Skills

While performing the duties of this job the employee will need to frequently communicate with others and must be able to exchange accurate information. Able to read, analyze, & interpret common technical journals, financial reports, & legal documents; to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, vendors & management personnel; to write reports that conform to prescribed style & format; to effectively present information to top management, customers, vendors, subordinates & others as required.

Mathematical Skills

Able to apply advanced mathematical concepts as they pertain to purchasing & departmental requirements; to apply mathematical operations to tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability & validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, & factor analysis.

Reasoning Ability

Be accountable for quality of work and ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists resulting in a reasonable and accurate conclusion that can be well communicated. Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, & draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form & deal with abstract & concrete variables.

Working & Physical Conditions

The physical demand described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. This position is a sedentary role with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer; however, while performing the duties of this job the employee will need to frequently communicate with others and must be able to exchange accurate information; consistently operate a computer and other office equipment. The employee will need to occasionally move about to meet with customers, access files, and use other office equipment. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

Other

Regular, full time. Must be able to work assigned hours and follow Attendance Policy.

Proficient with computer data entry and use of company software programs.

Detail oriented individual with excellent follow-through and communication skills.

Ability to multi-task, organize, prioritize, and coordinate work activities and to work in a fast-paced environment.
