As our global footprint continues to spread across the world, we are looking for an experienced Principal Engineer Grid Code Compliance to join our team in Germany (Bremen/ Hamburg/ Neu-Isenburg, hybrid or remote).

In this position, you will have technical oversight of the UL Solutions grid code services, serving as Regional or Global subject matter expert for multiple UL Solutions technologies. You will also represent UL on standards committees.

  • Manage or develop new standard programs and capabilities, regionally or globally.

  • Develop requirements, tests and supporting certification documentation to validate that power generating units, interconnection equipment and systems are compatible with the local and regional grid codes.

  • Establish relationships with grid operators and utility commissions in key regions, to increase knowledge of their needs as well as create bilateral rapport to increase acceptance and align our certifications of power generating units and systems with those interconnection requirements.

  • Work with customers to assist them in meeting evolving regulatory standards for steady-state performance.

  • Analyze and evaluate grid code requirements globally to:

  • Determine if there are different requirements for: transmission connection, distribution connection, DER type, DER size/ratings and other notable differences.

  • Determine minimum performance thresholds of interconnected equipment, such as battery energy storage system (BESS).

  • Compare requirements for potential combination of similar protocols or requirements to maximize representative evaluation coverage.

  • Capture customer technical and application requirements to understand regional and application-specific requirements.

  • Monitor and identify changes in grid codes globally in order to drive necessary changes to maintain UL Solution’s competitive readiness.

  • Collaborate with peers to facilitate cross functional requirements and support development of new requirements and evaluation programs.

  • University Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology or Physics from an accredited program

  • Generally twelve years or more of directly related work experience

  • Excellent communication and networking skills, internally and externally

  • Ability to establish new processes and technical documentation tools

  • Flexibility and innovation capacity
