In 2009 the organization expanded to become a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), serving patients of all incomes, ethnicities and walks of life. Over the last decade, FLCH has grown to provide medical, dental, and behavioral health services to over 28,000 patients at eight health centers. Job Summary:

The Billing Specialist is responsible for accurate and timely processing of billing documentation. This job opportunity requires you to help our patients resolve billing questions every day. Medical billing can be complex and often raises many questions for patients. You will be their advocate and have the responsibility to solve any billing conflicts between our office, the patient, and their insurance company. As a Billing Specialist, you will need to be cool under pressure while assisting patients with difficult scenarios. Providing quality customer service will be vital to success in this position.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Gathers information and documentation necessary to submit accurate, timely medical/dental claims for eligible Finger Lakes Community Health provider visits and receive the maximum allowable reimbursements due.

  • Trains/monitors progress with the Health Center Site Coordinator to enter accurate, timely data regarding patient insurance coverage and verification for services provided by Finger Lakes Community Health providers.

  • Creates, reviews and submits error free claims in request for payment from all assigned insurance carriers that Finger Lakes Community Health bills for payment directly.

  • Reviews and posts insurance and third party payments as received through the Explanation of Benefit or Electronic Remittance Advice.

  • Initiates follow up of unpaid or denied claims in a timely manner by taking the necessary steps to result in claim payment.

  • Creates and posts all credit card payments to the appropriate account that are received during a phone call.

  • Reviews patient accounts for calculation and chare/payment error as needed.

  • Encourages proper procedure by identifying claim errors and forwarding to the appropriate staff.

  • Assists with creating payment arrangements in conjunction with Health Center Site Coordinators for outstanding patient responsible account balances.

  • Receives and answers billing questions from patients and staff as they arise.

  • Notifies supervisor immediately upon realization of any charges to a patient or insurance carrier that do not appear to be standard practice.

  • Possesses knowledge of general accounting principles

  • Possesses basic computer skills

  • Possesses the ability to adapt to specific environments

  • Ability to prioritize

  • Possesses strong organizational skills

  • Previous Medical and Dental Billing Experience Required

  • Coding Experience Preferred

    Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency

  • Possesses valid New York State drivers license in compliance with FLCH drivers policy

  • Current New York State automobile insurance in compliance with FLCH underwriting agreement

    Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to hear and communicate with clients and staff on the telephone and those who are served “in person”

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.

  • Must have vision that is adequate to read memo’s computer screen, registration forms, and other documents.

  • Must possess manual dexterity, to perform writing and keyboarding tasks.

  • Must be able to reach above shoulder level to work, bend, squat, sit, stand, stoop, and kneel.

  • OSHA Level III
