Position Summary

SUNY Geneseo invites applications for the position of Director of Institutional Research & Effectiveness (IR&E) to lead the Office of IR&E, serving as a resource in evidence-based planning, policy formation, and decision making, and working with faculty, staff, and administration across all divisions of the college.

The IR&E Director regularly administers and/or serves as a consultant for all institutional surveys (e.g., NSSE ) to support the college’s institutional effectiveness and assessment work and is responsible for the college’s SUNY SIRIS , NYSED , IPEDS , and NCAA data submissions, as well as responding to required and college-wide accreditation-reporting and publisher-data (e.g., U.S. News, Princeton Review) requests.

The Director directs a management information program designed to provide data for administrative decision-making, which includes maintaining public- and campus-facing dashboards relevant to enrollment, student success, faculty workload, and other campus operations.

The Director manages a continuous improvement model using assessment of the college’s academic programs and administrative services while simultaneously satisfying external accreditors, state and federal agencies, and external marketing sources.

The Director of IR&E collaborates with campus colleagues on operations including assisting department leaders in planning appropriate evaluation measurements; analyzing and sharing information about the College; supporting decision-making, planning, and reporting; assisting with accreditation processes; providing leadership and coordination for institutional effectiveness activities; and supporting the College’s strategic planning process.

The Director of Institutional Research & Effectiveness reports to the Provost, and serves on the Academic Affairs Leadership Team, which is responsible for advising and setting a broad strategic agenda for the Division of Academic Affairs. This position is also a standing member of multiple cross-campus committees responsible for strategic planning and institutional assessment and accreditation.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher (terminal degree strongly recommended)

  • Demonstrated experience in institutional research, data management, statistics, educational research, or a related field involving advanced data management and analytical skills (quantitative and qualitative analysis)

  • Experience with state and federal reporting requirements for public universities and colleges

  • Supervisory experience of an office staff as well as student workers

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully with students, faculty, and staff across the college

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working environment

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent listener, strategic thinker, and problem solver

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of significant and relevant experience in a higher education management role that includes experience in supervising employees, building teams, collaborating with other campus units, and planning/executing data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting

  • Demonstrated proficiency with common higher education IR data technology (e.g., MS Office, PowerBI/Tableau, R/Python/ SPSS / SAS , PL/ SQL , Banner, Cognos) in a higher education setting

  • Proficiency in enterprise systems (e.g., Argos, Navigate, Slate)

Function 1: External reporting

  • Ensures timely completion of all external data requests, including mandatory/compliance reports; includes but not limited to IPEDS , NYSED , SUNY , NCAA , US News and World Reports, Princeton Review.

  • Maintains a comprehensive database for utilization in responding to inquiries from campus leadership, SUNY , and external agencies.

  • Collaborates with the campus accreditation liaison officer to ensure timely reporting to MSCHE and campus awareness of/compliance with accreditation requirements

  • Assists professional programs in compiling data relevant to AACSB and CAEP / AAQEP accreditations.

Function 2: Internal assessment and reporting

  • Coordinates all research activities relating to the study of the college as an institution; coordinates with staff to identify needs for information and problems for investigation, coordinating student, faculty and staff participation in institution studies.

  • Supervises the collection, analysis, and preservation of data for use by the institution in studies of policies and operations.

  • Provides data in response to internal requests, including but not limited to grant proposals and award applications.

  • Conducts research to answer questions of an institutional nature as requested by administrative officers of the college.

  • Administers, reviews, interprets, and disseminates findings of research studies to campus, includes but not limited to National Survey of Student Engagement, Student Course Experience survey, campus climate surveys.

  • Maintains public- and campus-facing dashboards and reports including but not limited to enrollment data, retention and outcomes data, student and faculty demographics.

Function 3: Campus data infrastructure

  • On an ongoing basis, develops appropriate data-sharing platforms to increase campus and public access to relent data rewarding institutional effectiveness.

  • Participates as needed in campus discussions and professional development programming relevant to data literacy.

  • Collaborates with the Provost’s Office to deliver training and workshops for deans, department chairs, and directors on accessing and making use of data available in IR dashboards, Argos, and other platforms.

  • Collaborates with CIT staff to facilitate user-friendly data sourcing.

  • Coordinates the timing of campus survey administration to ensure timely completion and avoid survey burnout.

  • Develops strong working relationships with Academic Affairs leadership, cross-divisional directors, and cabinet-level offices of the college to promote best practices across the college.

Function 4: Strategic planning

  • Serves as a resource for the Strategic Planning Group and Budget Priorities Committee and as a standing member of the College Assessment Council.

  • Participates as needed in campus planning on issues relating to enrollment, student success, and long-term institutional planning.

  • Collaborates actively with Enrollment Management, Finance and Administration, and Student and Campus Life divisions to support college-wide initiatives and long-term planning for recruitment, student success, and campus infrastructure.

  • Advises the Provost on data-informed areas of concern regarding student success.
