Position Summary
SUNY Geneseo invites applications for the position of Director of Advising.
The Director of Advising leads the Advising Office and is responsible for the coordination of academic advising services that supplement faculty advising, including professional development and training for faculty advisors. By facilitating the training of advisors, the Director facilitates a consistent and equitable standard of care for all students.
The person in this role regularly meets with students and ensures that advising, mentoring, class selection, and registration are learning-centered. This leader actively collaborates with the Provost’s Office, Registrar, and other relevant departments on designing and implementing workflows for course registration each semester, policy enforcement, approval processes, and satisfactory progress toward degree completion.
A direct report to the Associate Provost for Academic Success, the Director of Advising supervises and manages all personnel within the Advising Office, including hiring staff, conducting annual evaluations, and preparing yearly performance programs. The Director serves as a key member of college-wide committees focused on advising, student well-being, interpretation of academic policy, strategic planning, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives. They follow ethical standards and principles articulated by professional organizations, such as NACADA , and uphold the mission, vision, and values of SUNY Geneseo.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree or higher in an academic discipline or field related to student development
Minimum of three years’ progressive experience in higher education that includes classroom teaching and/or academic advising
Demonstrated leadership in promoting student equity and belonging and with fostering growth-minded approaches to student success
Experience with academic planning and advising tasks (e.g., using an early alert case management system, progress reports, degree audits, academic standards, etc.)
Strong organizational abilities
Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully with students, faculty, and staff across the college
Supervisory experience of office staff as well as student workers
Preferred Qualifications
Terminal degree in an academic discipline or field related to student development

Oversees Academic Advising
Through an equity lens, oversees academic advising in the College, including faculty advising, peer advising, and course registration advisement for new students
Inclusively coordinates academic advising services offered by the Advising Office team that supplement faculty advising (e.g., special cases that require additional consultation, transfer and waiver issues, students exploring or between majors, interpretation or clarification of policies)
Supports professional development and training to faculty advisors to provide consistent care for all students
Participates in college governance processes regarding advising, curriculum, and policy
Provides academic advising support to the Division of Enrollment Management for recruitment and retention of Geneseo students including return to complete students
Oversees undergraduate peer academic advising in the office, and facilitates consultation with department-based peer mentors and members of student academic organizations who volunteer to help other students understand curricular and registration procedures
Collaborates with staff in Academic Affairs, Student and Campus Life, and Enrollment Management to promote academic success resources, provide guidance on advising, and facilitate exploration of majors in new student recruitment, orientation, and first-year experiences
Coordinates support to students seeking advice or solutions to complex academic problems (e.g., repeat courses, pass/fail requests, cross-registration, re-enrolling students, and students who are nearing graduation) or issues that require cross-divisional collaboration (e.g., financial holds)
Collaborates with the Provost’s Office, Registrar, and other relevant departments on assessing, designing, and implementing workflows for policy enforcement and approval processes to improve the student experience, streamline operations, promote efficiencies, and minimize cumbersome bureaucratic processes for students and faculty advisors

Collaborates and partners with the Office of the Registrar to improve the process and expedience of course registration for each semester and intersession
Assists with the transfer student registration process via close working relationships with relevant departments
Cultivates strong working relationships with Admissions, Financial Aid, and Student Accounts regarding student registration and onboarding processes
Ensures an efficient process of registration for new students in coordination with orientation work coordinated by the staff of Student Life
Assists faculty advisors, deans, and department chairs with helping students navigate college policies and procedures regarding academic registration such as waivers and exceptions, overloads, advising holds, and change of majors
