Dow Chemical Materials Engineer in Freeport, Texas

The Dow Chemical Companyhas an exciting opportunity for aMaterials Engineerin the Technical Support Department located inFreeport, TX.

Incumbent is the senior technical resource for the division for the application of existing and new metallurgical engineering technology and practices. Technology is applied to improve the reliability and performance of process equipment in the division and is recognized as having a high degree of metallurgical expertise.


  • Functions in the division applying metallurgical engineering solutions to recognized problems. Secures facts, evaluates data, and reaches sound conclusion which improve equipment reliability.

  • Performs failure analysis on failed equipment to determine root cause(s) and mode of failure and makes recommendations to prevent recurrence.

  • Specifies metals and alloys for new process equipment fabrication. Specifies materials and methods of repair for maintenance of equipment.

  • Performs and evaluates data from corrosion studies to predict useable life and prevent failures of process equipment.

  • Conducts cathodic protection surveys, designs systems, and makes recommendations to ensure integrity of piping and equipment in contact with soil or water.

  • Maintains current knowledge of technology, processes, applications and code requirements; applies these as a basis for material decisions.

  • Participates in technical professional organizations and with Dow technical task groups and /or materials emphases teams to address Metallurgical Engineering future direction.

  • Applies division Safety & Loss Prevention standards to ensure safe working environment for self and co-workers. Participates in all Dept. and Div. safety programs.

  • Knowable of environmental/industrial hygiene regulations and procedures and applies same to ensure safe working environment for self and co-workers.

  • Keys work on customer success; plans and schedules work efficiently. Tracks quality and productivity indices and establishes plans for continuous improvement.


Technical/Functional Knowledge:

  • Engineering – Design, material selection, and specification for chemical process equipment or engineering materials, and code compliance of same.

  • Maintenance – Broad knowledge of plant equipment and functions, maintenance requirements, failure modes, and repair procedures.

  • Development – Planning, testing, evaluation and application of new alloys, fabrication processes, and equipment.

  • Chemistry – Familiarity with div. production processes and compatibility of metals and alloys used for vessel and equipment in specific processes.

Human Relations:

  • Effectively and cooperatively communicates using oral and written methods.

  • Professionally presents self as a Technical authority with co-workers, plant personnel, engineers, contractors, managers, vendors, and other technical experts.

  • Accomplishes jobs through others, completeness and accuracy of data obtained depends directly of effectiveness of commutations at each level.

  • Responsible for effective communications with suppliers, vendors, fabrication shops, and colleagues throughout the technical community.


Nature of Thinking: Work encountered is diverse and ranges from theoretical to hands on work. Supervisory instruction for technical solutions of problems is minimal. Nature of work is non-repetitive and requires original thought and logic, drawing from technical knowledge and broad experience. Freedom to conceive solutions is limited only by considerations of safety, environment, quality and profit. Thinking is influenced by awareness of latest metallurgical technology.

Thinking Environment: Varies from office, lab, process plant and vendor facilities. Generally, time is available to consult resources or implement testing to solve problems. Occasionally decisions are made on the spot without study or peer counsel and the conclusions are critical to the continued safe operation of process units. Thinking occasionally is the most severe adverse conditions while observing problems under stringent time pressures.


Freedom to Act: Wide ranging freedom to use own judgment in planning, investigating and recommending action in problem solving, material selection, and design applications.

Impact: Has secondary accountability for operating expense and capital spending within work group. Most far reaching accountability is that shared with plant supervision for economic equipment consequences of each material selection and repair procedure decision made. The magnitude of this shared accountability is not quantifiable but easily exceeds $5 million per year.

Other Significant Factors: Generally a stand alone specialist with little backup.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree with a discipline in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering is required.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in manufacturing and engineering is required.

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
