GE Aerospace Engineer - CMC Combustor Mechanical Design in Evendale, Ohio

Job Description Summary

This role is within the Commercial Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) Mechanical Design team in GE Aerospace’s Engineering Division. The team is responsible for the design and development of CMC components within the High-Pressure-Turbine (HPT) and Combustor Module of the GE9X and LEAP Commercial Turbofan engines.

As the Engineer, you will play a role in supporting and leading projects focused on durability and producibility for our CMC combustor hardware. You will be responsible as an individual contributor to drive for design and manufacturing changes to meet program requirements, collaborating with materials engineering, manufacturing, and analysis teams. You will need to implement lessons learned from other programs and new fleet findings into the next iteration of the component design. Other responsibilities for this role will include supporting component delivery efforts, assisting in test & fielded engine reviews, and understanding change impacts to component requirements.

In this position, you will work directly with your team lead with some expectation of autonomy. You will be required to take ownership of the quality of your own work, and there is latitude to rearrange the sequence to complete task/duties based on changing work situations. While executing tasks, you will need to assess your capabilities and seek guidance from your supervisor and technical mentors when necessary.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop conceptual knowledge of hot section design, CMC design, and module integration within jet engine design. Build understanding as to how work of own team contributes to our commercial programs, future programs, and the CMC Integrated Product Team (IPT). Foster awareness of market trends, competition, and how products are differentiated.

  • Use some level of judgment and has ability to propose different solutions to address design and manufacturing challenges. Use on-the-job training and general knowledge of mechanical engineering to solve tasks. Access own technical skills, use analytic thinking, and consult with other internal sources to arrive at decisions and solve problems.

  • Collaborate with small teams and lead through completion of deliverables. Communicate schedule pressures and assist other cross-functional team members with program priorities. A job at this level requires good interpersonal skills and may be required to lead a junior team.

  • Develop substantiations for design changes and novel component non-conformances. Use fleet learnings, component test history, and comparative analysis to resolve corrective action approach.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Materials Engineering from an accredited university and 1.5+ years prior relevant engineering experience...

  • OR an Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Materials Engineering from an accredited university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong oral communication and technical documentation skills

  • Ability to be mentored while resolving complex problems

  • Familiarity with hardware ownership and engineering drawings.

  • Proficiency in CAD software (Unigraphics NX), GD&T, and assembly stack-ups

  • Turbine design, composite design and/or manufacturing experience.

  • Willingness to learn, ambitious to work with new technologies, and drive to understand ambiguous problem statements
