SUNY Cortland Assistant Professor - Criminology in Cortland, New York

DEPARTMENT PROFILE
When students explore sociology and anthropology at SUNY Cortland, they’ll immerse themselves in the study of the human condition. They’ll examine how societies and cultures are formed and how they shape and are shaped by human behavior. Students develop analytical, critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills that are vital in any walk of life. Classes are small, led by faculty who are eager to help students succeed. Students have opportunities for independent research, internships, fieldwork, study abroad and service-learning will let them put classroom theory to the test in the real world. In a rapidly changing world, students will obtain a liberal arts education that fosters versatility in the world of work and good citizenship.
The list of career paths the department prepares students for is long and diverse. Our graduates have gone on to successful careers as educators, law enforcers, human service professionals, cultural resource managers, researchers, attorneys, human rights advocates, and more. The skills we impart are transferable across numerous fields.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
Teaching: The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in our large and vibrant undergraduate Criminology program. The Department is looking for teacher-scholars who can teach courses from a critical sociological perspective in the areas of global/comparative criminology and/or quantitative methods. The teaching load is three courses per semester and office hours as appropriate. The Department value’s commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds and a desire to improve access to higher education for all student regardless of background.
Advisement: Will advise 25 to 40 undergraduate students with declared majors in the Sociology/Anthropology department.
Scholarship/Research: Will be expected to maintain an active professional, research and publication agenda.
Service: Will be expected to contribute to the department, school and college missions through active service on committees and/or collegial participation in campus governance and community life.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Sociology or related field ( ABD will be considered with completion date prior to appointment)
Demonstrated ability to teach courses in the field of global/comparative criminology from a critical sociological perspective, and/or quantitative methods .
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience/interest in teaching courses on critical queer criminology or cybercrime
Experience teaching general sociological methods as well as other topics on crime policy and society
