SUNY Cortland Assistant Professor - Adolescence Education: Science 7-12 in Cortland, New York

Position Summary:

SUNY Cortland is accepting applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Adolescence Education – Science at the Assistant Professor rank beginning in fall 2024. The successful candidate will be housed in the department with which their scientific interests are most closely affiliated, either the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics Department.

Major Responsibilities:

Teaching

  • Teach professional preparation courses required for adolescence science majors seeking New York State certification to teach biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics in grades 7-12 (e.g. Introduction to Adolescence Education, and Teaching the Sciences in the Middle and Secondary Schools (Methods I and II). Additional responsibilities for teacher preparation include formal observation and evaluation of student teachers in local public middle and high school science classrooms.

  • Within their affiliated natural sciences department, participate in the teaching of introductory science courses.

Research

  • Maintain an active research program that involves undergraduates and has the potential for external funding.

Service

  • Provide service to the department and university that includes advisement and mentorship of students with diverse backgrounds.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or doctoral candidate, all but dissertation ( ABD ) (with degree conferral by August 2024) in science education, or curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in science education, or a closely related field.

  • Evidence of effective teaching at the college level

  • Formal teaching experience in secondary science education

  • Evidence of scholarly productivity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of formal teaching experience in secondary science education

  • Current certification, or eligible for certification, to teach science at the secondary level

  • Knowledge of state and national secondary level science curricula and standards

  • Experience with the accreditation process for teacher preparation programs

  • Experience in developing collaborations with school district partners

  • Demonstrated experience in working with students from diverse backgrounds in an educational setting,

  • Graduate coursework in a field within the natural sciences.

  • Established record of published peer-reviewed scholarly work
