Space Lab Technologies, LLC Thermal Engineer III for Lunar Surface Payload in Boulder, Colorado

Space Lab is currently looking for a Thermal Engineer Level III to support research and development of advanced technology for human space exploration and space science. This position specifically involves development of the Lunar Effects on Agricultural Flora Beta (LEAF ß) payload for operations on the Lunar surface, which is crew deployed during the NASA Artemis III mission (may be manifested on a later mission). This position reports to the LEAF ß Principal Engineer. The expected start date for this position is July 1, 2024.

Responsibilities: The Thermal Engineer Level III (TME III) leads the development of the LEAF ß thermal system for payload heat rejection. This includes the radiator system, MLI, structural coatings, internal ventilation, chamber humidity control, instrument suite thermal control, electronics thermal control, and the sample return temperature control. The TME III provides the Lunar thermal environment simulation to the system engineers for performance analyses. The TME III also provides an operational simulation of the end-to-end system for the system engineer s performance analyses. The TME supports the development of relevant ground support equipment.

Overall Responsibilities: -Self-Led project and sub-system coordination -Leading a team of engineers -Effective communication with Space Lab staff, vendors, and customers -Project management and systems engineering -Structural, fluid, and thermal engineering -CFD and Heat Transfer Analyses -MLI Design -Radiator Design -Heat Exchanger Design -Ventilation Design -Pressure Vessel Design -Flow Process Design (e.g. tubing, fittings, valves, etc.) -Adhering designs and verification to spaceflight standards, especially NASA standards -Analytical and simulation-based analyses -Space flight hardware development -Ground support hardware development -Small-scale verifications -Thermal vacuum chamber testing -Vibration, Shock, and Acceleration testing -Deployment Testing -In-field mechanical operations, especially for launches and recovery -Technical writing for reports, grants, publications -Technical writing and support CAD and simulations for proposals -Technical presentations to customers and the public

Requirements: This position requires extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts to include structural design and analysis, fluid flow analysis and simulation, and thermal system analysis and simulation. Knowledge and experience with SolidWorks, COMSOL, ANSYS, or equivalent software tools are required. Experience with MATLAB is required. Experience with the use of spaceflight standards is required. Travel for conferences, customer presentations, payload integration/testing, and rocket launches is required approximately 6 per year. The position is a full-time exempt position of 40 hrs/week, where the duties require minimal supervision. Overtime work above the 40 hrs/week is expected only to meet deadlines.

Education and Experience Requirements: M.S. in Mechanical Engineering +2 years experience or B.S. +6 years experience

Salary: $100,000.00 to $130,000.00 /year
