Boston University TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, College of Arts & Sciences, Playwright's Theatre in BOSTON, Massachusetts

Boston Playwright's Theatre at Boston University seeks a Technical Director. This role's primary responsibilities are to oversee the daily operations of all theatre spaces (including two theatres, the carpentry shop, multi-function room, and storage areas), and to manage and implement the production elements of our professional theatre season. The TD oversees the budgeting and purchasing of all technical elements, builds all scenery, and hires and supervises PT crew members and student production assistants. The TD also has important administrative roles, scheduling and conducting production meetings, collaborating with student and professional designers, and keeping multiple lines of communication flowing efficiently. The Technical Director is an integral member of a tight team of four staff members and one faculty Director. The TD maintains space and production calendars, and is the main contact for visiting companies using the spaces.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Technical Director will: Collaborate with the Managing Director to create production budgets and establish timetables for builds.

  • Cost out scenic and lighting designs and collaborate with designers to realize their visions within our established budgets.

  • Build and install all scenery and oversee lights and sound installations.

  • Sometimes work on weekends and evenings.

  • Attend all technical rehearsals and resolve notes as needed.

  • Schedule and run production meetings to confer with creative teams to realize designs.

  • Hire, train, and supervise technical crews and work study students in production builds, including lighting and sound installations.

  • Purchase supplies for all productions and for the maintenance of the productions and spaces.

  • This can involve getting quotes, comparative shopping and sometimes driving to pick up materials as needed.

  • Schedule and serve as the main contact for visiting theatre companies, groups, and individual use of theatre spaces.

  • Scheduling must take into account the academic calendar as well as production calendars.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.

  • One to three years of experience.
