JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • The Director of Exhibitions is responsible for managing the design, development, and implementation of innovative and ground-breaking transdisciplinary exhibits at the intersection of art and science.

  • This role requires a creative, collaborative, and strategic thinker with a passion for engaging audiences through immersive experiences and one who can participate in the hands-on exhibit process as needed.

  • Leads the planning and execution of exhibit projects from the open call process to completion, ensuring they align with Science Gallery Atlanta's (SGA) mission and goals.

  • Organizes and facilitates a community meeting with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), particularly Emory faculty, to gather insights and input crucial for guiding the development of open calls for exhibitions.

  • Leads the development and management of a curatorial panel comprised of experts who will provide guidance on open call selections and facilitate communication channels pertinent to the exhibition.

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, develops and manages a full exhibition budget each year tracking expenses, and ensuring projects are completed within budget.

  • Collaborates with a high level of effectiveness with cross-functional and cross-disciplinary teams, including researchers and artists, educators, and design teams, to synthesize individual exhibitions into a cohesive theme.

  • Oversees the design and construction of exhibits, including coordinating with external designers, vendors, contractors, and installers.

  • Ensures exhibits are installed and maintained to high standards, including overseeing, and in some cases conducting, repairs and updates as needed.

  • Develops and implements strategies to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of exhibits, including visitor feedback and data analysis.

  • Stays current with trends in exhibit design and museum practices and incorporates best practices into exhibit development.

  • Develops a documentation system to maintain information and records of various aspects of the exhibition and related programming/materials.

  • Identifies pop-up exhibit opportunities, negotiate exhibit loan agreements and insurance where required, within budgetary requirements.

  • Ensures strong engagement throughout the process of young adults in the target audience range of 15-25-year-olds.

  • Participates collaboratively with SGA staff in the evaluation and development of topically relevant programming to be held concurrently during the exhibit season, for example, events, workshops, talks, and performances.

  • Ensures that each exhibit includes a focus on Emory research and/or involves a scientist or researcher from Emory.

  • Develops exhibit briefs for training purposes, including an explanation of each exhibit, including key personnel, and desired educational outcomes.

  • Works with SGA staff to ensure mediators receive adequate training on the proper use and maintenance of exhibits, including opening and closing procedures, safety and/or emergency considerations.

  • Participates in public talks about/with artists, researchers regarding artwork presented by SGA, being present at in-person gatherings and programs associated with each exhibition.

  • Collaborates with the SGA leadership team to design and execute communications strategies to ensure successful promotion of the exhibition, including serving as an ambassador for SGA on social and traditional media and in other public forums.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in museum studies, design, or a related field and seven years of experience in exhibition design and production, including three years managing staff.

  • Prior experience developing highly interactive museum exhibit components; fluency with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Vectorworks, Sketch-up and CAD Tools as well as project management software.

  • Master's degree is preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated track record of working effectively with individuals from disparate backgrounds including faculty, researchers, artists, staff, and a variety of exhibit tradespeople.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute comprehensive project plans, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.

  • Proven track record of successful exhibition planning, development, and execution within a museum, science center or gallery setting.

  • Proficient in budget management and financial planning for exhibitions. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Familiarity with evaluation and assessment techniques for measuring the success and impact of exhibition projects.

  • Ability to speak to audiences about exhibit processes and outcomes.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
