Transplantation Immunology Laboratory – Albany Medical College

The Transplantation Immunology Lab (TIL) at Albany Medical College is seeking a dynamic Clinical Lab Technologist to join our dedicated team of healthcare professionals!

Clinical Lab Technologists in the Transplant Immunology Laboratory perform a variety of technical procedures including HLA typing by molecular and serologic methods, antibody screening and identification by solid phase microbead (Luminex) and complement-dependent methods, and donor/recipient crossmatching by flow cytometric and complement dependent methods. This position includes on-call testing for deceased organ donor workups.

The Transplant Immunology Laboratory provides immunological and molecular assays for histocompatibility testing between organ donors and recipients for the solid organ transplant programs at Albany Medical Center and University of Vermont Medical Center. Testing is also performed to support patients receiving platelet transfusions, patients in need of stem cell transplantation, to help with the diagnosis of certain HLA-associated diseases, and to prevent HLA-related drug hypersensitivity reactions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include: • Performs all HLA typing, HLA antibody screening and identification, and donor/recipient crossmatching procedures. Identifies the antibodies in patient's blood that could react adversely and cause harm to the person receiving a transplant.• Performs special HLA procedures as directed. • Receives, accessions and aliquots blood specimens sent to the laboratory. • Prepares solutions, media and reagents used in the laboratory.• Exercises independent judgment and responsibility to perform procedures and interpret test results.• Assumes "on-call" assignments for deceased donor testing as scheduled. • Records all results of tests conducted in the laboratory accurately and completely.• Maintains records of all procedures performed for reporting and billing purposes.• Assists in procuring, storing and maintaining supplies; recommends the procurement of new or additionally needed supplies.• Responsible for the orderliness and cleanliness of the TIL and equipment maintenance.• Communicates effectively with transplant centers, departmental personnel, medical and nursing staff concerning technical and procedural issues relating to the department.• Participates in the evaluation of new procedures, methods and equipment within the TIL's activities.• Assists in training new technologists and providing information regarding job performance and policies and procedures of the TIL and of the College.• Assists with on-going research and developmental activities relevant to histocompatibility and transplantation as directed.• Is responsible for technical quality of work performed including accuracy, documentation, and thoroughness of procedures completed.• Contacts/consults with appropriate personnel when test findings are abnormal and when difficulties are encountered in testing.• Demonstrates competence by performing external and internal proficiency testing.• Performs quality control procedures, maintains records within the laboratory, and documents problems and remedial action as appropriate. • Participates in the monitoring, evaluation and continuous improvement of quality within TIL.• Participates in formal teaching programs, conferences and in-service educational programs as required.• Maintains knowledge of and follows all Albany Medical Center, NYSDOH, ASHI and CMS regulations and technical standards. • Practices appropriate personnel, fire, safety, infection control, and hazardous chemical policies and implements them accordingly.

Minimum Qualifications for Clin Lab Tech II: • New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or New York State Restricted License in Histocompatibility or currently eligible for either of these. NYS license requirements can be found here. • Three years of relevant experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist I in histocompatibility testing; or one (1) year experience in histocompatibility testing and ABHI Certified Histocompatibility Technologist/Associate (CHT/CHA) certification. • Maintains continuing education as required by the NYS Dept. of Health, ABHI and ASHI and maintains ABHI CHT/CHA certification and MT(ASCP) if applicable. Applicants without relevant histocompatibility testing experience can be considered for a Clin Lab Tech I position.
